The Latta Lady Vikings Edged the Hannah-Pamplico Lady Raiders 6-5 in varsity softball playoffs held in Pamplico on Friday, May 22.
Hannah-Pamplico scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead. The Lady Vikings responded with 5 runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead. The Lady Raiders scored a run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 3 runs for Latta, 5-2. Latta added a run in the top of the sixth inning. The Lady Raiders added 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Latta a 1-run win, 6-5.
Latta’s Samantha (Sam) Townsend led off the game with a hit to the left field fence for a stand-up double. That was the only hit for the Lady Vikings in the first inning.
Allie Nettles garnered a walk to begin the bottom of the first inning for the Lady Raiders. Savannah Owens hit a grounder to short and was out at first with Nettles advancing to second. Kadence Poston arrived on an error, and Nettles scored for the Lady Raiders to go up 1-0. Hannah-Pamplico loaded the bases but were unable to get another run onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning.
Latta’s #17 arrived safely on an error. The Lady Vikings’ #10, Lacie Barnhill, walked. #7 hit a grounder up the middle and picked up a rbi to tie the game at 1. Latta’s #2 bunted and arrived safely to load the bases. Samantha (Sam) Townsend bunted and 2 runs scored. Chayse Walters hit a sac fly to center to score a run. Paisley Jackson hit one by second for a single and a rbi to give Latta a 5-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, Meredith Stone drove one to left and arrived at second on an error. Hannah-Pamplico crossed home plate to cut the lead to 5-2.
In the top of the sixth inning, Samantha (Sam) Townsend bunted safely. A. Hyatt bunted and arrived safely at first on a throwing error to place runners on first and second. Chayse Walters sac bunted to move the base runners to second and third. Paisley Jackson sac bunted, and Townsend scored to give Latta a 6-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Allie Nettles hit one to right for a single. S. Owens hit one between right and left for a double to place runners on second and third. K Poston his one by short for a single and 2 rbi. Meredith Stone hit a grounder to short and the base runner was out at second on a fielder’s choice. Chloe Cooper hit one to center for a double and a rbi to cut Latta’s lead to 1 run, 6-5. On a fly out to right, the game ended with the Latta Vikings edging the Hannah-Pamplico Raiders 6-5 to force game 2.
Each team had 7 hits in the game.
Hannah-Pamplico committed 5 errors in the game. Latta did not commit an error in the game.
Paisley Jackson was on the mound for Latta. She struck out 7 and walked 4 to pick up the win.
Kadence Poston was on the mound for Hannah-Pamplico. She pitched 7 innings and allowed 7 hits, 6 runs of which 5 were earned, walked 3, and struck out 8 of the 36 batters she faced.
