Each year the American Legion, Post 0032 here in Dillon works with the South Carolina Boys State Organization to select Boys from the 11th grade in our local schools for an opportunity to attend the Boys State Encampment at Anderson University for a week in June.
While at Anderson University, Boys State has one primary objective, that is to train these young Men on the practical democratic principles of our government. This also includes running for mock offices on the local and state level.
Being selected by The American Legion requires that the student be interviewed by members of The American Legion and given a test on our government from the local level to the federal level. The students with the highest grades are called Delegates.
The number of Delegates that we can send to Anderson University depends on how much money is donated to The American Legion. The cost to send one Boy to Anderson University is $300.00, this year we have had enough donations to send 16 Boys to Anderson University to participate in this worthy cause.
The Citizens of Dillon County are helping The American Legion, Post 0032 give our young Men an opportunity that they would not have without the Boys State Organization.
The young men selected are ones that Dillon County, the Schools, Teachers, Counselors and the Parents can be proud of. They have all contributed to the quality of these young men.
The young men who did not get to go to Anderson University are Alternates; they will have the opportunity to go if one of the Delegates can’t go.
