Three Marlboro County High School Students signed to continue their education and football careers at the next level on Wednesday, March 4, at the Marlboro County High School Media Center.
Family, friends, coaches, school officials, and many more attended the signing.
Marlboro Head Football Coach Cory Johnson thanked everyone for coming. He thanked the 3 football players for all of their accomplishments including their gpa at the school. Johnson remarked that the players did what needed to be done each day. He stressed that football scouts were looking for 4 things: 1. speed and measurability, 2. academic grades with a core gpa, 3. tape to show one’s athletic skills, and 4. be a “good human”. He thanked the players for themselves, family, and school. He is super proud of these players.
Although Tremayne Ashford received other offers, he signed with Averett University where he will major in Business Administration and play football, a sport he had played his entire life. He was influenced by his Dad and brother.
Everett University should be a good fit for Ashford as it feels like home. Ashford remarked after his visit there, that “he loves a small town like that one. It’s full of good people, and a great environment for me.”
While at Marlboro County High School, Ashford was a running back and a wide receiver. He also ran track.
Ashford recalled a memory about his former school where his team made the state playoffs as a sophomore.
Ashford learned some values in his freshmen year that he will carry from the high school level to the college level.
When not studying, practicing or playing football, Ashford enjoys horse back riding.
Ashford is an outstanding student with a 3.6 gpa. Ashford served as a running back, slot receiver, outside receiver, or any position the coach wanted him to play. He is a great athlete.
Ashford’s parents, Andrena Highsmith and Lavonte Ashford, are very proud of their son’s accomplishments, both on and off the field. They are excited that he will continue his education and enjoy playing football at the same time. They look forward to many new accomplishments for their son.
Troy Hailey signed with Methodist where he will pursue a degree in Sports Management and play football.
He should be a good fit at Methodist as he felt welcomed and wanted by the coaching staff and players.
Hailey has been playing football for 7 years, having been inspired by his Dad, coaches, and family members. As a Bulldog, he played tail back and running back. Not only did he play football, he also wrestled and ran track. He also made All-Region.
Hailey will carry the memory of a summer camp where he was able to bond with the team. He will also carry with him to the next level the mental mindset that the coaches helped him gain to be a better man in the future.
While not playing or practicing football or studying, Hailey enjoys working out, listening to music, and eating.
In his senior year at Marlboro County High School, Hailey had 1,200 yards, 10 touchdowns, and made All-Region. He did not miss a work out while at Marlboro County High School. In his career, he had over 3,000 yards and 35 touchdowns.
Hailey’s parents, Troyius Hailey and Shree Roberts, are very proud of their son’s achievements. The look forward to his continued success, both on and off the field.
James McLean signed to continue his education and football career at Averett University where he will major in Business Management.
McLean, having been influenced mostly in this sport by his godbrother, he has played football since he was 8 years old. Not only is he good at football, he also excels at basketball and baseball.
McLean should be a good fit at Averett University as he is impressed with ho w the defense operates as he is an outside linebacker. He will always stay focused and ready to work as he goes to the university.
He will always carry the memory of his getting his first touchdown.
While he is not playing or practicing football or another sport, he likes to chill, work out, and play the games.
James McLean had 67 tackles, 8 tackles for a loss, and 4 interceptions with 2 of them going for touchdowns.
McLean’s parents, Lisa and James McLean, are very proud of him, not only as a football player but also as the person he has become.
Each signee thanked God, Family, and Coaches for all of the help given each one of them.
