The LMS ProTeam class has been studying the “I Can Be Different” module in the course’s curriculum. Yesterday, students experienced “Disability Simulation Stations” where they were able to get firsthand experience of what it’s like to live with disabilities including visual, hearing, and speech impairments, as well as physical limitations and sensory disabilities. Stations included wearing altered sunglasses, speaking and listening with cups over their ears, reciting a nursery rhyme with a mouth full of jelly beans, picking up paper clips with thimbles on their fingers, and writing with their non-dominant hand and/or with their feet.
This lesson is designed to create ability awareness and promote tolerance and empathy for those who live with disabilities. To close out the lesson, students will complete research on different disabilities, create a one-page infographic, and present their findings to the class. (Source: Latta Schools)
