The 13th Annual Harnethea B. Manning Scholarship Musical was held at Brandi’s Banquet Hall on May 4, 2024.
The program was opened with a prelude by Second Chance and the Welcome by Dr. Miranda E. Page.
Mrs. Linda Manning Langley was the Mistress of Ceremony. The Scripture was given by Elder Wanda Mitchell of Marshill Bibleway Church. The Invocation by Reverend Delen McRae of Carvell Street Baptist Church, Florence, SC.
Ms. Jade McDowell melodiously sang two songs and Second Chance performed beautifully.
The Purpose was done by Mr. Glenn B. Manning, Jr: Mrs. Harnethea Bethea Manning was born April 3, 1915 to the late Truss and Lily Bethea in Dillon County, SC. Harnethea joined Marshill Bibleway Church as a little child and remained an unwavering and faithful life-time member. A devote Christian with a huge heart to give and a big love for her prayer ministry. Harnethea was united in holy matrimony to Paul Manning, Sr., who preceded her in death. To this union, seven children were born: Paul, Jr., Glenn B., Patricia A. (deceased); Joe M., Linda M., L. Casey and Sandra D. Harnethea was called home to her final resting place on March 3, 2004. Paul and Harnethea were not able to complete their education, but they made sure their six children completed college. This legacy of lending a helping hand to anyone in need in her church and community is what their six children are carrying on. We want to financially assist any deserving young person to further their higher education endeavors.
The Honorable L. Casey Manning (Ret.) was the keynote speaker. Judge Manning emphasized how beautiful his mother was and how handsome his father was. They were very smart, too. The essence of his message was History and Voting. The 2024 Kentucky Derby was held on May 4, 2024, as well as the Scholarship Program, in Louisville, Kentucky. The History: On May 17, 1875, Oliver Lewis, a black man won the first Kentucky Derby, the colt was Aristides. The trainer was Ansel Williamson, also a black man. There were 17 jockeys and 15 of the 17 were black. Judge Manning emphasized how we stand on the shoulders of so many people who came before us and their valuable contributions, to this city, county, state and country, and they have made these places, great places to live. They chartered paths in all areas and walks of life for us, let’s not forget our history. Voting: Please value the vote! Your vote counts! People struggled and died for this right. We cannot underestimate this contribution. Our parents, Harnethea and Paul may have been proud parents, but we are prouder, as the children of them. Lastly, try your best, work your hardest. I hope that all continue to receive God’s Blessings.
The yearly Humanitarian Recognition was given to Mrs. Georgie Thomas, a successful business woman throughout Dillon, South Carolina, North Carolina and all surrounding counties. Mrs. Georgie was the first Black Florist in Dillon and was known for sending flowers to new business owners. Mrs. Thomas is loved and respected.
The 2024 Harnethea B. Manning Scholarship was awarded to Mr. Jayden Benjamin, a Dillon High School Senior. Jayden is the proud son of August and Joey Benjamin. The mayor of the city of Dillon was unable to attend but sent a letter to be read at the event. “You are such an outstanding role model for all the youth in our community such as those who will be receiving this scholarship. The City of Dillon is very fortunate to have someone of your stature to call this community home.” Nicholas Tally McColl, Mayor City of Dillon.
