Marion County Council Honors Mrs. Elista H. Smith

FROM MARION COUNTY
During the Marion County Council meeting, Marion County Attorney Charles L. “Chuck” McLain, III, along with County Council, proudly presented a Resolution honoring Mrs. Elista H. Smith for her historic and lasting contributions to our community. Mrs. Smith made history as the first Black woman elected to serve on Marion County Council and later as the first Black woman to serve as Vice-Chair — breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of women in leadership.

In addition to her public service, Mrs. Smith founded The RISE Mentoring Program in 2012. The program focuses on mentoring and empowering local youth and operates as a valued resource for Marion area schools and families, earning strong community support.

Mrs. Smith’s leadership, vision, and dedication continue to impact Marion County, and Council was honored to formally recognize her legacy.
