Latta Defeats Bamberg-Erhardt 6-0

The Latta Vikings and the Bamberg-Ehrhardt Red Raiders continued play on Monday in Latta after a rain delay on Saturday, May 4.
On Saturday, the two teams completed 2 innings of play with Latta leading 4-0.
Colby Smith was on the mound for the Latta Vikings after a delay in preparing the field prior to the start of the game. He struck out the leadoff batter before Brian McMillian hit one to center for a single. Preston Stokes drew a walk. Smith struck out the next batter and walked the following batter to load the bases. The next batter went down swinging to leave 3 stranded.
Bamberg’s #8 began on the mound. Latta’s leadoff man, Nick Lane, was hit by a pitch followed by Fisher Richardson who was also hit by a pitch. Seth Minshew lined one to left for out one. Preston Brown drove one to left for a single and a rbi that left runners on the corners. The runner at first stole second. Mason Weatherford hit a grounder to deep short and arrived safely at first but the runner heading to third was out as he slid into the base. The runner at first stole second. Eli Jones got onto base and returned safely to second. Latta’s #13 garnered a walk. A run scored, and the runner on first moved to second safely. Colby Smith hit one between left and center for a double and a rbi. After 1 inning of play, Latta was up 4-0.
The Red Raiders were retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the second inning as was the Vikings in the bottom of the second inning.
Play resumed on Monday. After a day of rain, the baseball field was wet and took some time to prepare it before the game could begin. The game resumed at 7:30 with the threat of rain.
Bamberg-Ehrhardt, #8, hit a grounder between third and short for a single. As the play progressed, the leadoff person was thrown out attempting to take third. With runners on first and second, out 2 was accomplished with a strike out followed by Chase Collins who hit a grounder to second to end the top of the third inning.
In the bottom of the third inning, Latta’s #6 dropped one into left for a lead-off single. Latta’s #10 sac bunted to move the runner to second. Mason Weatherford hit a grounder to third to move the runner to third on the throw to first for out 2. The inning ended on a strike out.
In the top of the fourth inning, Bamberg-Ehrhardt’s #10 lined one to left for a single. Latta’s catcher, Mason Weatherford , caught a but that was popped foul for out 1. #14 hit a grounder by third. #9 hit a fly to left for out 2. #4 walked to load the bases. #8 hit a grounder up the middle that was fielded by the shortstop who tagged second base for out 3 to stop the threat of scoring.
Bamberg-Ehrhardt’s pitcher faced only 4 batters in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Latta retired the first 2 batters in the top of the fifth inning before Bamberg-Ehrhardt managed 2 singles in a row. The Vikings stopped the next hitter for out 3.
Latta managed to add 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning that made the final score Latta 6 and Bamberg-Ehrhardt 0.
Latta did not commit an error in the game, and Bamberg-Ehrhardt committed only 1 error.
Latta is 17-8 for the season.
Latta will face Johnsonville at 5:00 p.m. today (Tuesday, May 7) at Johnsonville.
