The Dillon Wildcats edged the St. Pauls Bulldogs 7-6 in varsity baseball action played on Wednesday, April 29, in Dillon.
St. Pauls took an early 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Dillon responded with 5 runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-2 lead. Dillon added 2 runs in the bottom of the second inning and held on to claim the 7-6 as St. Pauls added 2 runs in the top of third inning, 1 run in the top of the fourth inning, and a run in the top of the seventh inning.
The Bulldogs managed 5 hits in the game with C. McNeill with a double, a single, and 2 rbi in his 4 at-bats. D. Forbes had a single and a walk in his 3 plate appearances. T. Lavoie had a single and a walk in his 3-plate appearance. J. Brooks had a single and scored 2 runs in his 3-plate appearances.
The Bulldogs committed only 1 error in the game.
St. Pauls’ C. McNeill pitched 5 innings and allowed 2 hits, no runs, and struck out 7 of the 16 batters he faced. T. Lavoie pitched .2 of an inning and allowed 1 hit, 3 runs of which 1 was earned, and walked 3 of the 8 batters he faced.
The Wildcats’ pitchers did a great job to pick up the win on Seniors’ Night.
Dillon’s Hank Grider came in with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning. There were 2 outs, and Dillon had a 2-run lead. Grider pitched 1.1 innings. He delivered 4 strikeouts, no walks, and no runs.
With 96 strikeouts in 46.1 innings, Grider is tied for the state lead.
Dillon ends the regular season with a 13-5 overall record and 6-4 in AAA Region 7 play and in second place.
