The new City of Dillon Police Department has many people reflecting on the department’s rich history. This excerpt from the grand opening program gives a brief history of the department:
“The City of Dillon Police Department has a rich history marked by significant milestones that highlight its evolution over the years. Established in 1928, the department’s first headquarters was located on North 1st Avenue, with a pioneering phone number of just “128.” The department saw advancements in its operational capabilities with the acquisition of its first patrol car in the late 1930s, a move than enhanced their ability to serve and protect the community in 1996. Officer Wes Neville spearheaded the establishment of the department’s first Drug Unit, addressing growing concerns over drug-related crimes. The department further expanded its capabiltiies with the formation of its first K-9 Unit in January 2002, under the leadership of, then Sgt. David Lane, with K-9 ‘Sam’ playing a crucial role in enhancing law enforcement efforts. Remarkably, Joe Rogers stands out in the department’s history for his dedication, serving the City of Dillon Police Departmetn for an impressive 43 years, the longest tenure to date. These highlights reflect the department’s commitment to adapting and growing to meet the needs of our community.”
