Jamal Campbell earned his place in Dillon County history by becoming the youngest person to ever serve on Dillon County Council, and he hopes to be remembered for the impact he continues to make on others and the commmunity.
Jamal Campbell, born February 24, 1993, in Prince George’s County, Maryland, hails from Dillon County, South Carolina, where he spent his childhood. After graduating from Dillon Public High School, Jamal pursued his passion for cooking by obtaining a degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales University. Known for his creative thinking, keen intuition, and insight, Jamal combines these qualities with strong consulting principles and proven techniques, consistently delivering remarkable results.
Jamal began his professional journey as a Culinary Arts teacher at Marlboro County High School, where he taught for four years and shared his passion for the craft. Demonstrating a steadfast work ethic and integrity, he has continuously applied his persistence and resourcefulness to innovate within the field of Culinary Arts. In 2016, he was presented certification of from the South Carolina Department of Education for his significant contributions to revising Culinary Arts Standards and Resource Development for students across the State of South Carolina.
Building on his culinary expertise, Jamal advanced in his career and earned a strong reputation. He was appointed Food and Beverage Director at Phoenix Senior Living in Hartsville, South Carolina, where he demonstrated visionary leadership. His strategic skills in organizational development, planning, evaluation, and advisory support led to his early appointment to the PSL steering committee just six months into his role.
Those who work with Jamal describe him as a systems thinker, an active team player, and a community-focused individual who prioritizes the welfare of others. He serves as a board member on the Advisory Council for Dillon Technology Center and leads the SC Pro Start initiative for the National Restaurant Association. Jamal has a proven ability to drive impactful change in community services, always working with urgency to improve underperforming systems.
Jamal’s leadership extends beyond his professional career. He served for four years on the Dillon County Council and currently holds the position of Director of Operations for Marlboro County Government. As a servant leader, Jamal is known for using his talents to glorify God, and he is a dedicated member of the Door of Hope Christian Church under the guidance of Bishop Michael and Pastor Malinda Blue.
Outside of his professional and community roles, Jamal enjoys traveling, playing musical instruments, and spending quality time with his family. He is happily married to Jamesa D. Campbell, and together they have two children, Jamea I. Campbell and Jamal C. Campbell II. Motivated by a strong sense of purpose, Jamal strives to achieve his personal and political goals while maintaining his unique path. He currently resides in Dillon County, where he continues to make strides toward realizing his ambitions.
Jamal made history as the youngest person ever elected to the Dillon County Council. “As the youngest person ever elected to serve on the County Council, I felt deeply honored, but also fully aware of the responsibility I carried to blaze a trail for others who would follow, “ Jamal said. “My life serves as a testament that with faith in God, we have the power to control our own narrative. Like many young people, I was reared in a single-parent home, and I wanted to show others that no matter the challenges we face, success is within reach. My hope is to inspire others to overcome obstacles and set a path for future generations to follow.”
When asked how he would like to be remembered in history, Jamal said, “I would like to be remembered in history as a change agent who defied the odds and always went the extra mile to serve others and help them reach their destiny. I want to be remembered not just as someone who identified problems, but as someone who brought solutions. Above all, I hope people remember me for striving to serve with professionalism and integrity in everything I did.”
