Se’Lisa is the is the founder of You Are Not Alone (Y.A.N.A.) Special Needs Support, which started shortly after her son, Ephraim, was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2 years old. This support ministry is for families of children, teens, and young adults with special needs/unique challenges regardless of their diagnosis. She believes that God has a purpose and plan for each of them.
Since the inception of the support group, families from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia have been impacted by various modes of outreach (i.e. conference calls, workshops, face to face meetings, and other resources). One of its most influential yearly events is the Annual Autism Awareness & Other Disabilities Event in April.
Bishop Michael Blue of Door Of Hope Christian Church, Marion, has said that Se’Lisa has “a special grace for a special need.”
Her motto is, “Whatever I do, I do it as unto the Lord.”
In August 2006, Se’Lisa founded You Are Not Alone (Y.A.N.A.) Special Needs Support to make a meaningful impact in our community. “This support ministry/group was birthed from my personal journey when my youngest son was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. At that time, the nearest Autism Support Group was at Lester Elementary School in Florence, S.C., which met on the last Thursday of each month. After attending several, informative sessions, I felt inspired to establish Y.A.N.A. to provide support and encouragement to other families in our community facing similar challenges,” said Se’Lisa.
“From my own experiences at the onset of this special needs journey as a parent, I am dedicated to making a positive impact in others’ lives through understanding, compassion, encouragement, and support. Whether by offering advice, sharing information on resources, or simply listening, my aim is to let them know that they are not alone. My mission is to uplift, inspire, and equip them with the necessary tools needed as they advocate for their children, teens, or young adults,” said Se’Lisa.
“I firmly believe that everyone holds the power to make a positive change within their community, regardless how big or small their actions may be. Many families with children, teenagers, or young adults who have special needs often experience feelings of isolation or misunderstanding. By utilizing our unique gifts to demonstrate kindness, compassion, and active support, we can initiate a ripple effect of positive transformation. I encourage everyone to embody the spirit of a good neighbor by engaging with and supporting local organizations and events, such as You Are Not Alone (Y.A.N.A.). Whether through volunteering your time or providing necessary donations, your contributions are invaluable. Collectively, when we each fulfill our roles, we cultivate stronger, healthier, and more interconnected communities,” said Se’Lisa.
