April has been declared as ‘Donate Life’ month in City of Dillon. Donate Life is an organization that educate, inspire and motivate individuals to register to be an organ, eye and tissue donor.
A nonprofit organization called UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) manages the national transplant waitlist and matches organ donors to recipients (24/7/375). In 2024, UNOS surpassed 48,000 organ transplants, more transplants than in any previous year.
With that said, there are currently still over 104,500 individuals still on the waitlist – individual waiting for their life saving or life improving transplant. 85% of the people on the waitlist are waiting for a kidney. Every day 13 people die waiting for a transplant and every 8 minutes another person is added to the waitlist.
A deceased donor has the potential of saving 8 lives with donations of heart, lungs (2), kidneys (2), liver, pancreas and intestines in addition to enhancing lives with donations such as skin, eye heart valves. Living donors can donate a kidney or a lobe of their liver.
Every donor whether a deceased donor or a living donor is a hero! Register today at the Donate Life SC website (www.donatelifesc.org). Be a Hero!!
