A MOMENT IN HISTORY: Craig Brown Served As A Navigation Officer On A Submarine

Long before he was a Dillon County Sheriff’s deputy, Craig Brown was a navigation officer in the Navy on a submarine as the Cold War continued in 1971. Pictured along with Craig are the two men who trained him and recommended him to take over the navigation division when they left. In the middle is James L. Trader. Retired Captain of the West Virginia State Police; to his left, Tim MeLanson, retired Master Chief U.S. Navy, who is now deceased; and the bearded fellow on the far left is Craig Brown. His beard was blood red except for under the lip which was blond. The photo was taken in 1971 by the Chief of the Boat, who was a Silver Star winner of World War Two. Craig said these men were true heroes.
