Dillon County VFW Post 6091 proudly hosted a complimentary luncheon on May 23rd at the City of Dillon Wellness Center, specifically for veterans and their family members. Mayor Tally McColl set the tone for the event with a heartfelt welcome to everyone present. This gathering attracted 89 attendees and 16 support agencies, displaying a strong sense of community. Mr. Mathius Carter delivered a compelling presentation about the Road Home Program, which aims to combat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. He candidly shared his personal journey with PTSD, detailing its onset, symptoms, and the treatments he pursued. Now serving as the Veteran Outreach Coordinator for the program, Mr. Carter’s insights provided invaluable information about the various therapeutic modalities available, underscoring the importance of seeking help and support in overcoming these struggles. The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) was also instrumental in making the luncheon happen. Outreach Specialist Ms. Sheryl Hussein from the Fayetteville office informed veterans and their families about the Wounded Warrior Project’s transformative impact on our nation’s approach to veteran care. Their initiatives not only uplift veterans, fostering their journeys toward lasting health and well-being, but also extend vital support to families and caregivers, actively working to prevent veteran suicides. Importantly, every warrior receives support at no cost. They are dedicated to standing by them, their families, and their caregivers, ensuring that “No Warrior is ever left behind.”
The VFW Service Officers assisted 12 veterans and their families with disability and entitlement claims. Experts from various state and local organizations provided valuable information on the range of services and programs available to veterans and the Dillon community. Members of Post 6091 highlighted upcoming events and resources they offer, reinforcing their commitment to support local veterans and families. There was a strong emphasis on the importance of community members recognizing veterans and families who may be facing hardships. Post 6091 also distributed Pathfinder cards, encouraging everyone to share these resources with those who might need help or information about available support in South Carolina.
