The Latta Vikings edged the Lake View Wild Gators 6-5 in varsity baseball playoff action held in Latta on Saturday, May 16.
Latta took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off a walk by Latta’s #4 and a home run by Mason Weatherford.
Neither team scored in the second inning. Lake View placed 3 runs onto the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. With 2 outs on Lake View, Bryce King hit one to the left center fence for a stand-up double. The Wild Gators’ #11 hit a chopper to short to place runners on the corners. Ian Capps hit a grounder between second and first fora single and a rbi. Lake View’s #12 was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The Wild Gators’ #22 hit one to left for a single and 2 rbi to give Lake View a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, Latta’s #13, RW Berry hit one between left and center for a stand-up double. Mason Weatherford hit home run #2 to pick up 2 rbi and give Latta a 4-3 lead. Latta’s #22 hit one by third and was safe at first. Latta’s #11 hit one to center for a single. #5 hit a grounder to short, and the runner was out at second but the runner was safe at third and first. Latta’s #3 garnered a walk to load the bases. Latta’s #0 hits a grounder to deep short and was safe at first with a rbi to give Latta a 5-3 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, Lake View added 2 runs to the scoreboard to tie the game at 5. Lake View’s #12 hit a grounder to third that was caught but the throw pulled the first baseman off the bag and #12 arrived safely. He moved to second on a passed ball. The Wild Gators’ #22 drove one to left for a single and a rbi. Chase Price hit a grounder down the third base line for a double to place runners on second and third. Latta changed pitchers. Lake View’s #7 hit a sac grounder to short and was out at first but picked up a rbi to tie the score at 5.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Latta’s #4 hit a grounder between short and third for a single. Latta’s #13, BW Berry hit one up the middle for a double to place runners on second and third. Mason Weatherford received an intentional walk to load the bases. Latta’s #11 hit a grounder to the pitcher who slowed the hit to allow #11 to arrive safely at first and a run scored to give Latta a 6-5 lead that would be the final score of the game.
Lake View had 7 hits in the game. L. Newell had a double and a rbi in 4 at-bats. Bryce King had a double and scored a run in his 3 at-bats. Chase Price had a double and was hit by a pitch in his 4-plate appearances. Landon King had a single, was hit by a pitch, and stole a base in his 4-plate appearances. C. Moody was hit by a pitch and scored a run in his 4-plate appearances. Ian Capps had a single, a rbi, and scored a run in his 4 at-bats. Z. Burroughs had 2 singles and a walk in his 4-plate appearances. H. Lee was hit by a pitch.
Lake View committed 1 error in the game.
Lake View’s Chase Price pitched 4 innings, allowed 6 hits of which 2 were home runs, 5 runs of which 4 were earned, walked 4, and struck out 2 of the 23 batters he faced. Bryce King pitched 2 innings and allowed 4 hits, 1 earned run, walked 1, and struck out 2 of the 11 batters he faced.
Latta’s #13 began on the mound. In the fifth inning, #20 came into the game.
