The Wilson Tigers edged the Dillon Wildcats 26-21 in varsity football action played in Dillon on Monday, September 8.
After the Dillon Wildcat football seniors were honored prior to the football game, Dillon took the opening kickoff and began to move the football.
After a completion to Za Robertson and one to Dominick Felton, Za Robertson was on the receiving end of a 65-yard pass play that moved the football to the 15-yard line of the Wilson Tigers. Dominick Felton carried for an 11-yard gain. Khayel Sam Fong-Galia fumbled, and Wilson recovered on their own 16-yard line.
The Tigers quickly picked up a first down prior to 2 offside penalties in a row against Dillon for a first down that moved the football to Wilson’s 37-yard line. Wilson’s quarterback, #10, kept for a 7-yard gain. On the next play, Dillon’s Daniel Capehart intercepted a pass and returned it to the Wilson 15-yard line. Dominick Felton carried the football to the 1-yard line. Dillon’s Daniel Capehart scored from 2 yards out with 7:18 remaining in the first quarter. The PAT was good by Jayden Lester. Dillon led 7-0.
On the ensuing kickoff to Wilson, Wilson fumbled, and Dillon’s Rike Niyongabo recovered the football. Dillon quickly moved the football to the Wilson 13-yard line where Wilson took over on downs.
Wilson faced a third down and 14 yards to go for a first down. A completed pass to #13 picked up a first down. After picking up a couple of first downs, the Tigers faced a fourth down and 17 yards to go. Wilson’s #13 punted to Dillon’s 20-yard line. Dillon was forced to punt.
After the Tigers picked up a couple of first downs, Wilson’s #8 carried to Dillon’s 1-yard line. Dillon’s defense forced a fourth down and 8 from the 8-yard line. With 5:16 remaining in the first half, Wilson’s #17 scored on a reception. Wilson’s #34’s PAT was good. The score was knotted at 7.
Dillon’s Nibras Harrison returned the kickoff for 22 yards. Dillon was unable to move the football and was forced to punt.
Wilson began on their own 27-yard line. With 11 seconds on the clock in the first half, Wilson was on Dillon’s 3-yard line. As time expired, Dillon was charged with delay of game and an unsportsmanlike conduct. Wilson scored; the PAT was blocked. At halftime, Wilson led 13-7.
At halftime, the seniors in the band were recognized. Additionally, Scrubby’s honored Angela Bailey Grossetti as the “Teacher of The Week”.
Wilson took the opening kickoff of the third quarter. Dillon’s #2 intercepted a pass. Dillon moved the football to the Wilson 18-yard line. Wilson took over on downs.
The Tigers were forced to punt. Wilson’s #13 punted to Dillon’s 44-yard line. From there, Dillon reeled off three first downs that was capped off with a 7-yard TD pass to Dillon’s Daniel Capehart with 3:38 remaining in the third quarter. The PAT was no good. The score was knotted at 13, and this would be the score after 3 quarters of play.
Wilson moved the football to Dillon’s 5-yard line. The Tigers faced a fourth down and 12 yards to go for a score. Wilson’s #17 was on the end of the 12-yard TD pass with 9:24 remaining in the game. Wilson’s #34’s PAT was good. Wilson led 20-13.
Dillon’s Keryien Brown returned the kickoff to the 50-yard line. Dillon was forced to punt. Dillon’s JJ Campbell’s punt placed the football on Wilson’s 16-yard line.
Wilson faced a third down and 14 yards to go for a first down. The Tigers’ quarterback kept for a 13.5-yard gain. On fourth down and 1/2-yard to go for a first down, Wilson’s #9 kept for the first down. Wilson again faced a third down and 23 yards to go for a first down. The Wilson pass was deflected, and Dillon’s #2 intercepted to give Dillon the football on Wilson’s 20-yard line. Dillon’s Daniel Capehart scored with 1:39 remaining in the game. The PAT was good. Dillon’s Khayel Sam Fong-Talia kept for the 2-point conversion to give Dillon a 21-20 lead.
With 35 seconds remaining in the game, Wilson scored to go up 26-21. The PAT was blocked.
Dillon is 1-2 for the season. Wilson is 2-1.
Dillon will travel to Marion this Friday, September 12, for a 7:30 p.m. game.
Wilson will host West Florence on Friday, September 12.
