The George F. Spradley Scholarship celebrates extraordinary students with family members currently serving in the military or who served in the past. Applicants are invited to write an essay about a family member’s military service and reflect on how that experience has positively shaped their lives. This year’s inspiring winner is Jasmine Jones, a dedicated senior at Latta High School.
Jasmine hails from a family with a proud tradition of military service, featuring her grandfather, uncles, cousins, and brother. Their valiant contributions span from World War II to the Vietnam War and the Desert Storm campaign. The dedication and sacrifices of her family members have profoundly shaped her values, particularly through her brother, Darius Jones. Darius, who served four years in the U.S. Coast Guard, acquired invaluable skills like steering a ship, navigation, engineering, and firefighting. His stories of resilience and triumph, combined with lessons in discipline, responsibility, and goal-setting, inspire Jasmine to pursue excellence in all her endeavors.
With an unwavering focus on her future, Jasmine plans to attend Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, ready to embrace new challenges and opportunities.
