COLUMBIA, S.C. (January 31, 2025) – T.J. Johnson, of Charleston County, was named Chairman of the South Carolina Department of Transportation Commission at the Commission’s January 31, 2025 meeting in Columbia.
“I am pleased to serve the South Carolina Department of Transportation and the State of South Carolina as the Chairman of the SCDOT Commission,” said Johnson. “SCDOT is finishing the 10-year plan strong and looking ahead to the future and I look forward to advancing the quality of life in our state with critical transportation projects.”
Johnson, a Commissioner representing the 1st Congressional District, joined the SCDOT Commission in 2023.
Johnson owns and operates automobile dealerships in South Carolina from the Grand Strand to the Pee Dee.
A graduate of Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing, Johnson served the United States Air Force, as a C-130 cargo plane Pilot.
Johnson began his automotive career in 1979 working with Ford Motor Company. He worked with Ford in a variety of capacities and in 1985 bought the dealership in Tarboro, North Carolina. In the time since, he has owned and operated a number of dealerships in South Carolina.
The Past President of the South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association, Johnson has served on the Board of Directors for more than 20 years. He has belonged to numerous civic organizations, including six chambers of commerce, the Horry Georgetown Technical College Foundation Board, the Wall School of Business Board of Visitors, and the Town of Ravenel Sewer Planning Board.
Additionally, he served on the Board of Directors of South State Bank for more than 20 years, serving as the Chairman of the Loan Committee, and as a member on both the Audit and Corporate Governance Committees.
