Southside Christian defeated Latta 8-6 in the first playoff game for the 1 A State Championship in baseball on Monday, May 20, in Latta.
Latta came up short in the come-back attempt in the last inning of play.
Southside Christian jumped out to an early 4-0 in the top of the first inning. The Sabres’ #15, Tyler Boleman, hit one to deep left for a leadoff double. #23, Cole Tarango, garnered a walk. #6, Carson Boleman, hit one to center for a single and a rbi. #14, George Massingill, garnered a walk to load the bases. Southside Christian’s #3 hit a grounder between first and second for a single and 2 rbi. The Sabres’ #10, Kolby Sentelle, hit a sac fly to right field.
In the top of the third inning, the Sabres’ #3, Nelson Vaughan, hit one to right for a single. #10 hit one to deep center for a triple and a rbi. Southside Christian led 5-0.
In the top of the fifth inning, Southside Christian’s #14, George Massingill, hit a hot grounder up the middle for a single. #3, Nelson Vaughan, was hit by a pitch. #10, Colby Sentelle, garnered a walk to load the bases. The Sabres’ #32, Jacob Wiggs, hit a sac fly to right. #9, Cole Mathews, hit a sac fly to left to give Southside Christian a 7-0 lead.
Southside Christian added a run in the top of the top of the seventh inning to take an 8-0 lead.
Latta placed 6 runs onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Vikings had the tying run at the plate when the rally ended.
The Sabres are 26-7 for the season, and the Vikings are 23-13 for the season.
Carson Bolemon picked up the win. He pitched 6 innings and did not allow a hit nor a run, struck out 11, walked 3, and hit one with a pitch.
Preston Brown took the loss for Latta. He pitched 5 innings and allowed 7 runs, struck out 4, walked 4, and hit one with a pitch. Heath Mew came in relief in the top of the sixth inning.
Latta will travel to Simpsonville to face Southside Christian on Wednesday, May 22. If Latta forces a third game, it will be played at a neutral site.
