The Scotland County Fighting Scots edged the Dillon Wildcats 36-33 in varsity football action played in Laurinburg on Friday, August 22.
Dillon kicked off to Scotland County to open the football regular season.
Dillon forced the Fighting Scots to punt.
On the fifth offensive play of the season for the Dillon Wildcats, the reverse to Dillon’s #1 placed Dillon on the scoreboard. The PAT failed. Dillon led 6-0 with 8:46 remaining in the first quarter.
The Fighting Scots faced a fourth down and 1 yard to go when Scotland County’s #30 picked up a first down. The Scots quickly reeled off two more first downs prior to 3 going into the end zone with a 3-yard touchdown. The PAT was good by #84. Scotland County led 7-6 with 3:49 remaining in the first quarter.
Dillon returned the kickoff to Dillon’s own 43-yard line. On the first offensive play, Dillon’s quarterback fired a pass to Zay Robertson who scampered for the 57-yard score with 3:33 remaining in the first quarter. The PAT was good by #84. Dillon led 13-7.
Scotland County picked up a first down by #12, Samier Pate, and another one by #30, White, prior to Dillon committing a facemask charge for another first down. Scotland County’s #8 crossed into the end zone with a 5-yard touchdown with 1:40 remaining in the first quarter. The PAT was good to give the Fighting Scots a 14-13 lead.
Dillon’s Zay Robertson returned the kickoff to Dillon’s 40-yard line. The Wildcats’ quarterback picked up 6 yards followed by #8, Dominick Felton who picked up a first down but a flag was thrown against Dillon. Dillon’s #42 caught a pass and moved the football into Scotland County’s territory on the 49-yard line. Dillon’s #7, Daniel Capehart, scored a 4-yard touchdown with 8:58 remaining in the second quarter. The PAT was good by #84. Dillon led 20-14.
Scotland County’s #12, Samier Pate, returned the kickoff. A holding penalty against Scotland County placed the football on the 29-yard line for the Fighting Scots. After a 1-yard gain by #20, there was a holding call on the next play against Scotland County. The Fighting Scots faced a fourth down and 23. The punt by #7 placed the football on Scotland County’s 48-yard line to give the Wildcats good field position. Dillon’s #10 fired a completed pass to Zay Robertson who scored with 6:14 remaining in the first half. The PAT was good by #84. Dillon led 27-14.
The Dillon Wildcat defense once again forced Scotland County to punt on a fourth down and 18 yards to go. The punt carried to the Dillon 39-yard line. Dillon marched to the 36-yard line of Scotland County before turning the football over to the Fighting Scots on Scotland County’s 34-yard line. On third down with 2 yards to go, Scotland County’s #20, Mike McLain, picked up a first down to the 46-yard line. Scotland County’s #20, Mike McLain, fumbled on the next play, and Dillon recovered on the 46-yard line.
Dillon faced a fourth down and 7 yards to go and turned the football over on downs on Scotland County’s 42-yard line.
At halftime, Dillon was up 27-14.
After the halftime activities, Dillon’s JJ Campbell returned the kickoff to Dillon’s 45-yard line. Dillon’s offense moved the football to Scotland County’s 33-yard line. Faced with a fourth down and 7 yards to go, Dillon turned the football over on Scotland County’s 30-yard line.
Scotland County’s quarterback fired a pass to #80 who carried the football into the endzone for a 70-yard touchdown with 7:31 remaining in the third quarter. The PAT was good. Dillon led 27-21.
Dillon’s offense could not move the football, and JJ Campbell was forced to punt. Scotland County’s #32 returned the punt to Dillon’s 29-yard line. On fourth and 8 to go, Scotland County’s #7 punted. Dillon returned the punt to Dillon’s own 43-yard line. Dillon’s quarterback quick punted on fourth down and 2 yards to go to Scotland County’s 5-yard line. The Flying Scots began to move the football. An interception by Dillon’s #19 stopped the momentum as he returned the football to Scotland County’s 46-yard line. Dillon faced a fourth down and 13. Once again, Dillon’s quarterback quick punted to Scotland County’s 7-yard line. Scotland County’s #30 carried the football to the 44-yard line. Dillon was called for pass interference on a pass intended for #6 that moved the football to Scotland County’s 26-yard line with an automatic first down. On Dillon’s 49-yard line, Scotland County was forced to punt on fourth down and 11 yards to go. The punt placed the football on Dillon’s 32-yard line. Faced with a third down and 1 yard to go, Dillon’s #7, Daniel Capehart, rushed for a touchdown with 7:02 remaining in the game. The PAT was no good. Dillon led 33-21.
Dillon kicked the football out of bounds. On the re-kick from Dillon’s 35-yard like, Scotland County’s Pate returned the football to Dillon’s 41-yard line. Scotland County was faced with a fourth down and 6 yards to go on Dillon’s 25-yard line. Mike McLain picked up a first down to Dillon’s 15-yard line. Scotland County’s 20 carried to Dillon’s 6-yard line followed by a 5-yard run to Dillon’s 1-yard line by #8. Scotland County scored with 2:44 remaining. The PAT was good to cut Dillon’s lead to 5 points, 33-28.
After a penalty, Scotland County kicked off from Dillon’s 45-yard line. The onside kick recovered by Scotland County was the final nail in the coffin as Scotland moved the football and scored with 10.5 seconds remaining in the game. They added a 2-point conversion to give themselves a 36-33 lead which would be the final score of the game.
Dillon will host Socastee on Friday, August 29, at 7:30 p.m.
Scotland County will travel to Richmond County on Friday, August 29.
