SC State Honors College Empowers Students Via Thurgood Marshall College Fund Seminar

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Leadership training, career preparation, and financial aid opportunities were front and center for South Carolina State University students when the Dr. Emily England Clyburn Honors College brought the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) to campus earlier this semester.
Open to students of all classifications, the information session in the Engineering & Computer Science Complex equipped attendees with the knowledge and resources needed to elevate their academic and professional journeys.
“Providing our students with direct access to national programs such as TMCF ensures that they remain competitive in today’s workforce and graduate school arenas,” said Dr. William Whitaker, the Honors College’s dean. “These opportunities allow our scholars to expand their networks, build critical skills, and position themselves for future success.”
Participants engaged in discussions about prestigious TMCF programs and received firsthand guidance about the opportunities afforded by the organization.
“This event was truly empowering,” said SC State senior Bailey Scott, an Honors College scholar who also serves as Miss South Carolina State University. “TMCF provides invaluable opportunities that help students like me bridge the gap between our academic journeys and real-world career success. It’s amazing to see the resources available to us as HBCU students.”
The session featured a keynote presentation by TMCF Talent Manager Terria Byrdsong, who provided in-depth information on scholarships, paid internships, and the highly regarded TMCF Leadership Institute. The Leadership Institute prepares top students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) for careers in corporate America, entrepreneurship, and public service.
“The Thurgood Marshall College Fund is committed to supporting the best and brightest students at HBCUs across the country,” Byrdsong said. “Through leadership development, career preparation, and financial support, we ensure that students have the tools they need to reach their full potential. We are excited to continue working with SC State University and its outstanding student body.”
One of the session’s highlights was the TMCF Leadership Institute group interviews, which were held in the Engineering and Computer Science Complex. These interviews provided eligible students, who had completed their applications, an exclusive opportunity to compete for a coveted spot at the prestigious Leadership Institute.
“This event underscores our commitment to providing transformative experiences for our students,” said Dr. Windy Stephenson, the Honors College’s executive director. “By engaging with TMCF, our students gain access to unparalleled career development and financial support that will propel them toward success.”

More student perspectives
Along with Scott, SC State student leaders and Honors College scholars who attended the event shared their thoughts on the impact of TMCF and what the session meant for their academic and career goals.
“As a soon-to-be graduate, learning about the career pathways and financial support TMCF offers was inspiring,” graduating senior Aleera Wheeler said. “Knowing that organizations like TMCF invest in students like us motivates me to keep pushing toward my goals.”
For Haben Woldabyezgi, SC State’s Mr. Freshman and a Presidential Honors College Scholar, found it exciting to see so many opportunities available through TMCF.
“This session helped me understand the importance of starting early and being proactive about securing internships and scholarships,” Woldabyezgi said.
SC State junior Rejoice Anaele, who serves as Miss Honors College, said the information session reinforced how vital leadership development is to success.
“TMCF’s commitment to HBCU students ensures we are prepared for the workforce and beyond,” Anaele said.
Honors students who attended the session earned three hours of community service credit, and registered participants were provided with dinner.
