On Friday, April 26th, 2024 at around 1:53 pm, Cpl. Kernard McLellan was going to Subway, on Radford Blvd, beside Food Lion. As Cpl. McLellan exited his vehicle, he heard a gunshot. Cpl. McLellan turned and observed a black car and an African American male subject shooting a gun.
Cpl. McLellan advised dispatch of this incident and ran over to confront the subjects, noting the black car was trying to leave the parking lot. At this point, the subject had a firearm running behind the black car, but wasn’t shooting at this point. Cpl. McLellan had his duty weapon out and ordered the subject to drop the weapon and get down on the ground. The subject did comply. He was handcuffed and detained along with another subject.
Cpl. McLellan radioed and advised responding officers of the black car leaving the parking lot. Sgt. K. Collins observed the vehicle at a high rate of speed and did turn around on the vehicle, which lead officers on a short chase. The vehicle entered Rosewood Apartments, where four African American males ran from the vehicle. All parties were taken into custody, with the exception of 1 who was identified.
The incident is being investigated by Dillon Police Department. The Dillon County Sheriff’s Office will continue to provide assistance.
Sheriff Jamie Hamilton extends his appreciation to Cpl. Kernard McLellan, Sgt. K. Collins, “A” Shift, Detective Cox, Detective Barfield, the City of Dillon Police Department, and the citizens of Dillon County.
This is a senseless crime in the middle of the day at a busy grocery store.
