Three NFL legends visited Gordon Elementary School on Thursday, November 13.
The excitement filled the gym as the three NFL Legions were introduced by Principal Shannon Berry. All three of these standouts played their college football at South Carolina State.
The first one to be introduced was Charlie Brown, who was in the South Carolina State 1981 Draft Class. In college, Brown accomplishments included 2 X All MEAC, 3 X Black National Champions, Division 1AA Best Game 1980 with 11 receptions for 280 yards and 2 touchdowns, career average yards per catch of 28.6 yards, Black College All-Star Game Alternate, and 4 MEAC Championships. Brown’s Hall of Fame included the South Carolina State University Athletic Hall of Fame, South Carolina State 1976 Team Hall of Fame, South Carolina State Health and Physical Education Hall of Fame, South Carolina State University All Centennial Team, St. John’s High School Athletic Hall of Fame, South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, South Carolina Football Hall of Fame, and MEAC Hall of Fame. Brown’s NFL accomplishments include 7-year career with 4 years with the Washington Redskins and 1 with the Atlanta Falcons, Super 17 World Champions, Super Bowl 18 Appearance, Pro Bowl 1983, Pro Bowl 1984, All Pro, Readers Digest NFC Rookie of the Year, NFL All Rookie Team, Holds Washington Redskins Rookie Record for Touchdowns, set new single season receptions records with 78 catches in 1983 to break the record by Bobby Mitchell with 72 catches in 1962, first Washington Redskins Pro Bowl receiver for 1983 since Charlie Taylor in 1975, and the only wide receiver in NFL history to play in back-to-back Super Bowl and Pro Bowl in the first 2 NFL seasons.
Brown was the #45 wide receiver in the South Carolina 1981 Draft Class. Brown was drafted in the 8th Round by the Washington Redskins.
Angelo King #61 LB for S.C. State 1981 Draft Class. He was a free agent for the Dallas Cowboys LB.
King’s college accomplishments include 3 X All MEAC, 2 X Black National Champions, SBN Black College All American, AP Honorable Mention Little All-American, Black College All-Star Game and 3 MEAC Championships.
King’s Hall of Fame included South Carolina State University All Centennial Team, and the South Carolina State Athletic Hall of Fame.
King’s NFL accomplishments included 7-year career with 3 years with the Dallas Cowboys and 4 years with the Detroit Lions, and the 1982 NFC Championship Game.
Dwayne Anthony Harper was an American former professional football player with the National Football League. He played college football with the South Carolina State Bulldogs. He was selected by the Seattle Seahawks. He also played for the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX. He also played for the Detroit Lions and the San Francisco Demons. His NFL stats include 571 tackles, 24 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles, and 1 touchdown.
The students at Gordon Elementary School were allowed to participate in some football drills and also were tossed a few passes.
