Mullins Edges Lake View, 22-21

The Mullins Auctioneers came from behind to edge the Lake View Wild Gators 22-21 in a varsity football game completed on Monday, September 2, in Mullins.
On Friday, August 31, the Lake View Wild Gators kicked off to the Mullins Auctioneers.
In a defensive battle in the first few minutes of the first quarter, the Auctioneers turned the pigskin over to the Wild Gators on downs on Lake View’s 39-yard line.
Unable to move the football, Lake View punted to Mullins who took over on their own 47-yard line.
Now, it was Mullins’ turn again to relinquish the football on downs. This time Lake View started on their own 23-yard line. This time, the Wild Gators began to move the football offensively picking up a first down followed by another first down, and another first down before the first quarter ended knotted at zero.
In the beginning of the second quarter, Kason Herlong rushed for a 1-yard touchdown followed by a Lucas Shamp’s PAT to give Lake View a 7-0 lead.
After the Lake View kickoff, Mullins began on their own 28-yard line but were forced to punt. Lake View took over on their own 47-yard line. With 4 minutes remaining in the first half, Lake View was knocking on the door at the 6-yard line threatening to score. Lake View’s Kason Herlong tossed a 1-yard TD pass to Darrius Page followed by another Lucas Schamp’s
PAT. At halftime, Lake View was up 14-0.
The game was stopped due to inclement weather and was to be continued on Monday, September 2, at 7:00 p.m. in Mullins.
In the Monday action, Lake View’s Yuri Richardson received the opening kickoff to begin the third quarter of play. Lake View’s Chase Price punted on fourth down to Marion’s 42-yard line.
Mullins began to move the football. After Mullins’ Anthony Campbell picked up 8 yards to the 50-yard line, Anthony Campbell carried for 8 yards to Lake View’s 42-yard line. Mullins found themselves facing a fourth down and 1 yard to go. The football was given to Zayan Grant who picked up the first down. The Auctioneers’ Lebron Avant carried for a first down after the reception. Mullins was now on Lake View’s 13-yard line. Lebron Avant once again picked up 9 yards prior to his carrying the pigskin in from the 3-yard line with 4:55 remaining in the third quarter. Mullins’ Kanazzion Bethea carried the football into the end zone for the 2-point conversion to cut the score to 6 points, 14-8.
After Lake View received the kickoff, Tyrell Foxworth rushed for 2 yards. Kason Herlong was in the grips of the Mullins’ defense and was called for intentional grounding. On fourth down and 22 yards to go, Chase Price punted, and Mullins took over on their 40-yard line. Mullins faced a fourth down and 7 yards to go. Mullins’ Deyon Ford carried the football and fumbles that was recovered by Timothy Waters who scampered 43 yards into the end zone. The Lucas Schamp PAT was good. Lake View led 21-8.
The Auctioneers’ Darrius Page returned the kickoff to Mullins’ 43-yard line. After 3 quarters of play, the Wild Gators were up 21-8.
Mullins’ Zayan Grant scored from 17 yards. However, a flag on the play nullified the touchdown. Mullins’ Kanazzion Bethea carried and a flag against Lake View gave Mullins a first down on Lake View’s 11-yard line. On fourth and 3, Mullins’ Kanazzion Bethea fumbled, and Lake View recovered the fumble on their 10-yard line. On fourth and 1, Lake View was stopped and Mullins took over on Lake View’s 18-yard line.
On fourth down, Mullins’ Anthony Campbell scored with 6:28 remaining in the game. Mullins’ Kanazzion Bethea was stopped on the 2-point conversion attempt. Lake View’s lead was cut to 7 points, 21-14.
Lake View’s Caleb Myers returned the kickoff to Lake View’s own 39-yard line. Lake View fumbled but recovered the football with a 2-yard loss. Tyrell Foxworth picked up 2 yards. After 2 offside penalties by the Auctioneers, Lake View faced a third down and 3 yards to go. A missed pass forced Lake View to punt. With a roughing the punter penalty, Lake View retained possession with a first down with 4:13 remaining in the game. Lake View fumbled, and Mullins returned the fumble to Lake View’s 25-yard line.
With 1:23 remaining in the game, Mullins scored with 1:14 left in the game. Mullins’ Amir Lee was on the receiving end of the 2-point pass to give Mullins a 22-21 lead.
Lake View returned the kickoff to their own 22-yard line with 1:08 remaining in the game. Tyrell Foxworth carried to Mullins’ 45-yard line after the reception. Lake View could not muster a score.
Mullins’ quarterback, Kanazzion Bethea, threw 2 touchdown passes and the Auctioneer defense helped the team come back from a 14-point halftime deficit to defeat Lake View.

Lake View will have an open date for Friday, September 6.
