Marlboro County School District Celebrates Third-Grade Teachers for Exceptional Growth

Bennettsville, SC – Marlboro County School District proudly celebrates a group of extraordinary third-grade teachers whose dedication and instructional excellence have sparked remarkable student growth across the district. Honored during the October 13, 2025, Board of Education meeting, these educators embody what it means to teach with purpose and passion.
The honorees include Christy Bradley Gibson, Jennifer Avery, Portia Clare, Jessica Deaton, Claire Darnell, Dawn Strickland, Judy Sanders, Heather Tadlock, Amanda Ransom (not pictured), Johanna Richardson, Michael Catanzarite (not pictured), and Ashlyn Mumford (not
pictured). Through a steadfast commitment to data-driven instruction, personalized learning, and studentcentered teaching, these educators have achieved measurable success that resonates far beyond the classroom walls. Their efforts caught the attention of State Superintendent of Education
Ellen Weaver, who recognized Marlboro County School District for significant student growth on the 2024–2025 SC READY assessments during the South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA) Conference in July 2025.
District data paints a powerful picture of progress:
• Wallace Elementary Middle School: Literacy scores increased by 20 percentage points.
• Bennettsville Primary School: Literacy scores increased by 18.7 percentage points following targeted reading interventions, and math scores rose by 9.1 percentage points.
• Clio Elementary School: Reading fluency improved by 18.3 percentage points and math performance increased by 21 percentage points.
• McColl Elementary Middle School: Literacy scores rose by 31.6 percentage points and math scores increased by 9.6 percentage points.
“These results represent more than numbers—they represent transformed lives,” said Dr. Helena L. Tillar, Superintendent of Marlboro County School District. “This recognition from State Superintendent Ellen Weaver affirms what we already know—our teachers are making a profound difference. Their growth represents not just improved scores but the power of education to change futures.”
