Man With Dillon County Ties Is Victim In Homicide Investigation In Charlotte-Mecklenburg Area

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A man with Dillon County ties was the victim in a homicide investigation in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the case, which occurred in the 7300 block of Rea Road in the South Division.
On Monday, July 8, shortly before 5:30 a.m., officers responded to a vehicle disabled call for service in the 7300 block of Rea Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim with a gunshot wound. MEDIC pronounced the victim deceased on the scene. Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services and CFD also assisted.
The victim in this case has been identified as Derrick Byas, 36.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Office. The funeral service for Private First-Class Derrick Kwan Byas will be Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at Manning Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m., located at 308 East Calhoun Street, Dillon, SC 29536. Burial will follow in the Florence National Cemetery in Florence, SC. The family is receiving friends at 2521 Hwy 9 East, Dillon, SC 29536. The public viewing for Private First-Class Byas will be Monday, July 15, 2024, from 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. at Bartell Funeral Home, Samuel Bartell Chapel, located at 2511 Highway 9 East, Dillon, SC 29536.
