On Monday afternoon, October 21st, a group of local home schoolers planted a dozen fruit trees on donated land of Highway 917 near Smithboro community. Pastor James Orr said, “This is a long-term project. It will take a few years before the trees bear fruit. In the meantime, the orchard will be added to in the next planting season. The intent is to be able to help local seniors and others with fresh healthy food at no extra cost to them. “ The homeschoolers ranged in age from nine to fifteen years old. The were supervised by Pastor Orr and Deacon Michael Dickens of Pyerian Baptist Church. The children planted five apple trees, two Asian pears, two Asian Persimmon trees, two Peruvian guava trees, and three blueberry bushes.
