LATTA, SC, May 3, 2024 — On Friday, April 26, 2024, the Latta Middle School Student Body Council delivered 50 pre-made care packages to the Pee Dee Coalition, located in Dillon, SC. The packages included: wash clothes, soap, dental hygiene supplies, and haircare products. For their inaugural community service project, the student council chose to support this non-profit, volunteer organization. According to the Pee Dee Coalition’s mission statement, this organization is “. . . dedicated to the reduction of sexual assault, family violence, and child abuse and to the needs of victims.”
The community service project was announced in early February of this year, assigning each grade level with a specific set of items to donate. Throughout that month, until the end of March, a great deal of student support was shown through the generous giving. Student Council President Gavin Grant felt the students worked well together in order to benefit and unify the community. “I believe this first project was indeed a success. I feel we can set an example for the students coming through the middle school in showing responsibility, organization, and community servitude,” Grant said.
