The 17-6 Latta Lady Vikings advanced to the second round of the state playoffs after win over 4-12 Cross Lady Trojans on Tuesday, February 18, in Latta in varsity basketball. This game was physical and lots of fouls.
Cross controlled the tipoff. Latta’s Kaliya Herman connected for a 3-point shot to get the Lady Vikings onto the scoreboard. Azarriona McRae hit a turnaround shot for 2 points. Jeziyah Page banked 1 in for 2 points. Kaliya Herman connected for another 2-point basket, and Latta led 9-0 with 5:11 remaining in the first quarter. Latta’s Kaliya Herman connected for a 2-point basket. Cross’ Sarai Mazyck scored a 2-point basket to get the Lady Trojans onto the scoreboard. Latta’s Jeziyah Page sank a 2-point basket and followed that up with another 2-point basket. Azarriona McRae sank a 2-point basket for the Lady Vikings, and Kaliya Herman connected for a 3-point basket from the corner. After the first quarter of play, Latta was up 20-2. Latta committed 2 fouls in the first quarter while Cross committed only 1 foul.
Latta’s Azarriona Page sank a 2-point basket. Cross’ Sarai Mazyck calmly sank 2 free throws. Latta’s Jeziyah Page was fouled as she scored a 2-point basket and also connected for a free throw. Cross’ Cherish Walker hit a 3-point basket that was answered by Latta’s Jeziyah Page who sank two 2-point baskets in a row. Cross’ Lauren Middleton sank 1 of 2 free throws after being fouled. The Lady Vikings’ Jeziyah Page connected for a free throw after being fouled that was nullified due to a lane violation. At halftime, Latta was up 28-10. Latta committed 5 fouls, and Cross committed 3 fouls in the second quarter.
Latta’s Layla Hyatt scored a 2-point basket to begin the third quarter followed by Cross’ Lauren Middleton who connected with a 3-point basket. The Trojans’ Raquel Green and Sarai Mazyck each sank a 2-point basket. Latta’s Kaliya Herman answered with a 2-point shot. Latta’s #11 sank 1 of 2 free throws followed by a 2-point basket by Latta. With 5:00 minutes remaining in the third quarter, Latta led 35-17. Cross’ Lauren Middleton connected for 1 of 2 free throws. Latta’s Azarriona McRae was fouled while scoring a 2-point basket but could not capitalize on the free throw attempt. After Latta’s offense saved the ball, Latta scored a 2-point basket followed by the Lady Vikings
Kardae McFadden who sank a 2-point shot. With 3:26 remaining in the third quarter, Latta led 41-18. Latta’s Kardae McFadden connected for 1 of 2 free throws followed by Jeziyah Page who sank 1 of 2 from the charity line. Cross’ Raquel Green connected for a 3-point basket followed by Lauren Middleton who sank both of her free throws. Latta’s Jesiyah Page sank a 3-point shot from the corner. She was fouled on her next shot and calmly sank 2 free throws. After 3 quarters, Latta led 45-25. Each team committed 5 fouls in the quarter.
Latta’s Jeziyah Page sank 1 of 2 free throws to get the fourth quarter started. Cross’ Lauren Middleton was fouled and was unable to shoot her free throws. Cherish Walker was unable to sink either of the free throws. Latta’s Azarriona McRae scored a 2-point basket. Cross’ Raquel Green hit a 3 from the corner. Latta’s Kardae McFadden sank 1 of 2 free throws. With 6:11 remaining the game, Latta led 49-28. Latta’s Janasia Gainey hit a 3-point shot followed by Kaliya Herman who sank two 2-point shots in a row. The Lady Vikings’ Janasia Gainey connected for another 3-point basket. With 3:41 remaining in the game, Latta was up 59-32. Kaliya Herman sank 1 of 2 free throws for Latta. Cross’ Lauren Middleton connected for 2 free throws from the charity line. With 2:22 remaining, Latta led 60-34. Latta added another 2-point basket followed by Layla Hyatt who sank a 2-point shot. Cross’ Raquel Green connected for a 2-point basket. Latta’s Jeziyah Page sank the final 2-point basket of the game. In the final quarter of play, each team committed 5 fouls.
