The Latta Vikings defeated the East Columbus Gators 49-6 in a non-conference game played at Lake Waccamaw, N.C., on Friday, August 23.
Latta was down 6-0 after the first quarter of play.
In the first moments of the second quarter, the Vikings scored and the PAT was good to give Latta a 7-6 lead. Latta quickly got the momentum and scored 2 quick touchdowns with back-to-back onside kick recoveries with the first one occurring with 8:13 remaining in the second quarter, Jayden Alford scored and Conley Dailey added the PAT. With 7:38, the duo of Jayden Alford and Conley Dailey added 7 points to give Latta a 21-6 lead.
With 5:41 remaining in the first half, Adrian McDonald returned a punt for a touchdown. Conley Dailey added the PAT, and Latta was up 28-6.
Latta recovered an onside kick on East Columbus’ 46-yard line. Adrian McDonald caught and reception followed by Jayden Alford scoring with 4:36 remaining in the first half. The PAT was good by Conley Dailey. Latta was up 35-6.
The Gators were forced to punt, and the Latta Vikings took over and quickly picked up a first down on a reception and carry by Adrian McDonald. East Columbus’ #3 intercepted a pass to stop the drive. The first half ended with Latta up 35-6.
At halftime, both East Columbus’ and Latta’s coaching staff were busy with the teams planning the second half while the cheerleaders were busy entertaining the crowd.
With the clock running in the second half, Latta drove to the Gators’ 7-yard line where Adrian McDonald carried the pigskin in for 6 points and Conley Dailey connected on another PAT to give the Vikings a 42-6 lead.
Latta substituted freely in the second half. After 3 quarters of play, Latta was up 42-6.
In the fourth quarter, Latta’s Xy’Mari Bethea recovered a fumble and scampered 98 yards to the end zone for a touchdown! Conley Dailey’s PAT was good to give Latta a 49-6 lead.
The East Columbus’ drive was stalled on an interception by Hayden Bullard. Latta began moving the football towards the goal line.
On offense for Latta, Jayden Alford rushed 10 times for 128 yards, completed 5 of 6 passes for 75, scored 4 touchdowns, and threw an interception. Fisher Richardson rushed 10 times for 110 yards and scored a touchdown. Adrian McDonald had 3 receptions for 55 yards. Makinley Wallace and Jacoby German each had a reception for 10 yards.
On defense for Latta, Makinley Alford had a solo tackle, and 4 assisted tackles. Amir Rogers had 4 solo tackles, 3 assisted tackles, and a sack. K J Evans had 4 solo tackles and an assisted tackle. Adrian McDonald had an assisted tackle. Jacoby German 2 solo tackles and 2 assisted tackles. Xy’Mari Bethea had 6 solo tackles, 2 assisted tackles, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery. Tymir Durant had an assisted tackle. Carlito White had a solo tackle and an assisted tackle. Gavin Aubin had 4 solo tackles and 3 assisted tackles. Tyquan Drawhorn had 5 solo tackles and 3 assisted tackles. Zamarion Monroe had a solo tackle. Zach Page had a solo tackle and an assisted tackle. Markel Jones-Brunson had an assisted tackle. B W Berry had a solo tackle and an assisted tackle. Isiah McRae had a solo tackle.
On special teams for Latta, Adrian McDonald had 3 returns for 90 yards including a touchdown. Conley Dailey had 6 kickoffs with 2 pooches, 2 penalties, and 1 touchback. Latta retained 3 of 4 onside kicks.
Latta will travel to Marion on Friday, August 30, for a 7:30 p.m. game.
