The Lake View Wild Gators defeated the Marion Swamp Foxes 26-13 in the football season opener on Thursday, August 21, in Marion.
It appeared that everyone was ready for the football season…the players, the coaches, the band, the announcers, the officials, and the press.
Marion took the opening kickoff from Lake View but was unable to move the pigskin and was forced to punt.
Lake View, also, was forced to punt on their first series of downs.
The Swamp Foxes began moving the football and managed to pick up a first down, the first of the season. With 3:17 remaining in the first quarter, Marion’s #8 rushed for a touchdown. The PAT was good by #82. Marion led 7-0.
Lake View’s #21 took the kick off. Jalen Clark picked up 8 yards on the first play from offense but the gain was nullified due to a penalty. Lake View’s #13 grabbed a pass for a completion followed by Chase Price who picked up a first down. At the end of the first quarter, Marion was up 7-0.
Jalen Clark picked up a first down to start the second quarter for the Wild Gators. Clark caught a pass on the next play and proved the football followed by a keeper by the Lake View quarterback, Chase Price. Once again, the play was nullified due to a penalty. With 5:40 remaining in the second quarter, Lake View’s #13 carried the pigskin into the end zone after the reception for Lake View’s first score of the season. Jalen Clark successfully completed the 2-point conversion to give Lake View an 8-7 lead.
After the kick off to Marion, Marion’s quarterback was sacked. The Swamp Foxes were forced to punt. The Lake View offense moved the football and found themselves on Marion’s 10-yard line with 57.6 seconds remaining in the first half. After a penalty, Chase Price rushed for a 15-yard touchdown to give Lake View a 14-7 lead with 50.4 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Chase Price was stopped on the 2-point conversion attempt. At halftime, Lake View was up 14-7.
Lake View fumbled the ball on the opening kickoff of the third quarter to give Marion great field position on Lake View’s 10-yard line. After a pickup of 4 yards by Marion’s #4 followed by Marion’s #1 who carried the pigskin to the 1-yard line, the Swamp Foxes’ #8 scored with 10:01 remaining in the third quarter. The 2-point conversion attempt was stopped. Lake View led 14-13.
On the ensuing Marion kickoff, the football sailed out of bounds to give Lake View the football on their own 34-yard line. With 9:45 remaining in the third quarter, Lake View’s #14 grabbed a pass and carried it into the end zone for 6 points to give Lake View a 20-13 lead. Lake View was penalized for a “celebrating after the score” to place the football on the 18-yard line. A false start moved the football to the 23-yard line. Lake View’s attempted pass on the 2-point conversion play was stopped. Lake View held a 7-point lead, 20-13.
The Marion offense could not get going after the kick off and was forced to punt.
After Lake View received the kickoff, Jalen Clark carried the football but lost his helmet due to a facemask call. The Wild Gators’ #9 picked up a huge first down with good field position. With 5:40 remaining in the third quarter, Chase Price kept for a 5-yard touchdown. The 2-point conversion attempt failed. Lake View led 26-13.
After the kick off, Marion’s #8 picked up two first downs before a holding penalty and a sack set them back. Lake View’s#31 picked up a Marion fumble and returned it to mid field with 1:13 remaining in the third quarter. After 3 quarters of play, Lake View was up 26-13.
Marion’s #22 intercepted a Lake View pass. After Marion’s #5 was dropped in the backfield for a loss, an intended pass for #7 failed. Marion was forced to punt.
Lake View also had to punt after being unable to move the pigskin.
With 4:22 remaining in the game, Lake View’s #14 caught and pass and carried it into the end zone. However, a penalty nullified the play.
On Friday, August 29, Marion will travel to Latta for a 7:30 p.m. game, and Lake View will host Mullins.
