IN MEMORIAM: George Melton Pullie

George Melton Pullie, 94, passed away at McLeod Hospice in Dillon, SC Saturday, September 14, 2024. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at the Latta Baptist Church with Reverend Dean Parker officiating. Interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery in Latta, SC following the service. Visitation will be Monday, September 16, 2024 at Kannaday Funeral Home in Latta from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
George was born in Latta, SC January 31, 1930 the son of the late Willie Monroe Pullie and Sallie Cook Pullie. He was the widower of Lila Mae Flowers Pullie and a member of Latta Baptist Church. George retired from the U. S. Army after twenty-two years as a Command Sergeant Major. He served sixteen months combat duty in Korea and thirteen months combat duty in Vietnam. George received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge for his service in Korea and Vietnam, The Korean Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal – Germany and Japan, five awards of the Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal with six overseas bars, Vietnam Cross of gallantry with Palm, and Vietnam Campaign Medal with DVC 60.
He was very active in the American Legion serving as Commander in the Dillon V.F.W., Past Commander in the South Carolina State V.F.W., and Past Commander of the Dillon American Legion. George served all chairs in the American Legion and V.F.W., holding Life Membership in the DAV, AMVETS and Vietnam Veterans Association. He received an appointment to the National Council Administration’s 2.1 million member Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also Dillon County Veterans Affairs Officer for almost twenty years.
George is survived by his son George M. Pullie, Jr. (Sarah) of Latta, SC; daughters, Jennette Yvonne Pullie, of Latta, SC and Joy Pullie Lee (Mac) of Waynesville, NC; brother, Larry Pullie of Latta, SC; sisters, Lelia Pullie Smith of Latta, SC and Kay Pullie Williams of Spartanburg, SC; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Lester Pullie, James Allen Pullie, and Robert Pullie; and his sisters Evelyn P. Brumbles, Elsie P. Walters, and Lois P. Woodle.
