IN MEMORIAM: Dr. Lonnie Ray Starnes

Dr. Lonnie Ray Starnes, 84, went to be with his Lord and Savior May 24, 2024. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 27, at 2:00 PM in the Kannaday Funeral Home Chapel in Dillon with interment in Greenlawn Cemetery. Dr. James Strickland will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
Dr.. Starnes was born February 10, 1940 in Union County, North Carolina, the son of the late Lawson Lee Starnes and Virgie McCoy Starnes. He was educated in Union County schools, graduated from Fruitland Baptist Bible College in Hendersonville, NC, and received a Doctorate in Theology from Clarksville School of Theology in Clarksville, TN. He was a minister in churches in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas for over sixty-three years. Lonnie loved to preach, build sermons, and made much of Jesus. His daughter was the apple of his eye but he loved all of his family. He loved his grandsons for their self confidence and their ability to build a good rapport with others. Most importantly, the respect he held for them. Dr. Starnes enjoyed rabbit hunting just to hear the beagles run. He also enjoyed fishing when he had time.
Lonnie is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-four years Kay Greene Starnes of the home in Latta, SC; daughter, Raetta Starnes Coleman (Rhett) of Dillon, SC; grandchildren Samuel, Riley and Jonathan Coleman; sister, Janie Helms (Joe) of Monroe, NC; and a special niece, Lisa Helms. He was predeceased by his brothers Wiley Starnes and Russell Starnes; and sister, Hazel Mangum.
