Golf Carts: The Rules Are In Place For A Reason

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

How many times have you seen it– children flying down the road in a golf cart, clearly under the age of 16, and no adult in sight, or a child driving with an adult as a passenger?
Many of us have at one time or another, and it appears to be just harmless fun, but unfortunately, it could be a dangerous situation when the rules aren’t being followed and one that can be avoided.
Here are some reminders from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety to ensure that you are operating your golf cart legally:
-Drivers must be at least 16 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.
-Your golf cart must be insured and must be registered and permitted with the SCDMV.
-Golf carts must be operated during daylight hours only.
-Golf carts must be operated on streets with a posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less.
-You must remain within four miles of your home or the address listed on the permit, where it’s legal to drive.
With the weather warming up, golf carts will be more prevalent as more and more people get out. Make sure your golf carts are being operated according to the law to avoid a senseless tragedy. Golf carts can be great gas savers, and golf cart rides can be great fun for the whole family when a licensed driver, who has the judgment needed to handle potentially dangerous situations, is at the wheel. The rules are in place for a reason. Drive carefully, stay safe, and have fun!
