Carolina Currents: Studies in South Carolina Culture, a scholarly series edited by Christopher D. Johnson, professor of English at Francis Marion University, was recently published. Carolina Currents is a cooperative project between Francis Marion University and the University of South Carolina Press.

The first volume of the Carolina Currents series contains original essays exploring South Carolina’s unique histories and cultures. The series is a venue for public-facing interdisciplinary scholarship, and the only such series dedicated to South Carolina. Each volume will bring together scholars from a variety of fields including history, sociology, political science, and literature.

This inaugural volume of Carolina Currents includes nine essays addressing a range of topics, including race and genealogical history, culinary history, nineteenth-century theater, Charleston’s German communities, the Civil Rights Movement, LGBTQ+ identity, and the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on South Carolina. There are also eleven reviews of recent books about the state included.
