EPA-Mandated Letter Causes Confusion; City of Dillon Has NEVER Failed Lead And Copper Water Test (UPDATED)

If you are a City of Dillon water customer, you may have recently received a letter about lead and copper in the water as mandated by the EPA, but don’t jump to conclusions–there are NO VIOLATIONS by the City of Dillon in terms of lead and copper in the water, and the City of Dillon has NEVER failed a lead and copper test.
The letter was discussed at tonight’s (Monday) Dillon City Council meeting. According to City Manager Glen Wagner, all public utilities must issue this letter. Eventually all residents of the City of Dillon will receive this letter. While some have already received this letter, some have not.
Wagner emphasized that the City of Dillon does not have any violations of lead and copper in the water and there were no water violations based on a recent SCDPH inspection.
Hardy Jackson, Water Supervisor, explained that lead and copper may be found in the water due to the connections at the service lines. Some of the fittings are before the 1980s and some have older galvanized pipe. He also emphasized that the city has never failed a lead and copper test, and they have not failed one now. There are NO LEAD AND COPPER VIOLATIONS.
We’re expecting more information from the City of Dillon on this matter tomorrow (Tuesday), and we’ll share any additional information that we discover at that time.

City Manager Glen Wagner released the following statement, “First and foremost, the City of Dillon Water system has met all Lead and Copper guidelines provided by SCDHEC and EPA. The letters were sent out to all customers on the City of Dillon system to make them aware of the new EPA’s Lead and Copper Revisions. As a part of the new rule requirements, the City was required to notify all customers that are serviced by a service line that contains either lead or galvanized metal or unknown material. At this time all are unknown material. It is important to note to anyone who received this notification, that it does not mean you have been exposed to lead. Also, the city is in the process of updating water meters, and at that time we will be able to better identify what type of material is part of your service line.
