SOCIETY HILL– After an extraordinary 30 years of dedication and service to CareSouth Carolina and its patients, Dr. Stephen Smith has announced his decision to transition into the next chapter of his life.
Dr. Smith’s career has been a testament to his passion for patient care, leadership, and community involvement.
Reflecting on his time at CareSouth Carolina, Dr. Smith expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had to make a difference. “There was so much flexibility in how I practiced medicine here, and I wasn’t held to rigid schedules that could limit patient care,” Dr. Smith shared. “I especially enjoyed seeing patients in nursing homes and the environment in the Society Hill office—it was always filled with laughter and joy.”
Dr. Smith highlighted the special relationships he built with his patients over the decades. “Having a patient panel you know well is incredibly rewarding. Some of my patients I’ve cared for for decades, and that familiarity makes it so much fun,” he said.
As a two-time Chief Medical Officer of CareSouth Carolina, Dr. Smith witnessed the organization’s incredible growth. “When I first started, we could practically fit all the providers around a card table. It’s been amazing to see how much we’ve grown. It’s a testament to our success and the care we provide,” he noted.
Dr. Smith hopes his legacy will be remembered for kindness and his impactful work in the Suboxone program, which helped countless individuals in their journey toward recovery.
Although leaving CareSouth Carolina is bittersweet, Dr. Smith emphasized the he will always have a special place in his heart for the organization. “I can say with certainty I’m not leaving because I dislike my job or office. I don’t think many people enjoy their work as much as I do,” he said.
Dr. Smith’s next chapter will focus on spending more time with his growing family. With two new grandchildren on the way, for a total of five grandchildren all under the age of two, Dr. Smith looks forward to being within 15 minutes of all his children and grandchildren. He also plans to continue providing care in nursing homes.
Dr. Smith’s last day at CareSouth Carolina is December 31, 2024.
