November 6, 2025
To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to formally announce my retirement from the position of Police Chief at the Dillon Police Department, effective December 1, 2025. After nearly 10 years in this role and over 27 years of dedicated service to the city this decision marks a significant and bittersweet moment in my life.
I began my career with the City of Dillon at the age of 21. I was the first K-9 officer with the City of Dillon and started a combined drug interdiction unit with the Dillon County Sheriff’s office on Interstate 95. I spent a large portion of my career as a K-9 Officer with K-9 “Sam“and working Drug interdiction on Interstate 95. I can truly say that I have had a wonderful career and have had the opportunity to work with some great people over the years.
I was promoted to the Chief of Police almost 10 years ago after serving as the Captain of the Department under the leadership of Chief Joe Rogers I was in this role for several years until I was promoted to the Police Chief. Serving as the Police Chief has been an incredible honor. I have had the opportunity to work alongside a talented team of officers and staff who are committed to enhancing public safety and building strong community relations. Together, we have faced numerous challenges and accomplished much, and I am proud of the positive impact we have made in Dillon.
As I transition into retirement, I reflect on the many friendships and experiences that have enriched my life during my time here. I am grateful for the support of our community, city leaders, and law enforcement colleagues, all of whom have contributed to my journey. It is this collaboration that has allowed our department to grow and succeed in its mission to serve and protect.
While I look forward to embracing new adventures in retirement, I will carry the values of service and dedication that I have learned throughout my career. I am excited to see how the Dillon Police Department continues to evolve and thrive in the future.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve this amazing community. It has truly been a privilege.
Sincerely,
David Lane
Police Chief
