The Dillon Lady Wildcats advanced in the Lower State basketball tournament with a 65-26 win over the Newberry Lady Bulldogs in Dillon on Saturday, February 22.
Newberry controlled the tipoff. There was plenty of action and fouls in this game.
Dillon’s Ayonna Lester sank the first 2-point basket of the game and followed with a free throw. Newberry’s Zy Dunbar knotted the score with a 2-point basket. Dillon’s Treasure Davis sank two 2-point baskets to give Dillon 7-2 lead. The Lady Bulldogs’ Cheyanne Anderson connected for 1 of 2 free throws. Dillon’s Mariah Campbell hit a 3-point basket from the corner. Newberry’s #1 sank a free throw that was answered by Dillon’s Azyriah Ford who connected for a free throw followed by Khwnylahi McKinnon who sank a 2-point basket and a free throw. The Bulldogs’ Cheyanne Anderson connected for 1 of 2 free throws. Dillon’s Zadaiya Moody connected on a layup followed by Khwnylahi McKinnon who sank 1 of 2 free throws. After a scramble for a loose ball, Dillon’s Zadaiya Moody connected on 1 of 2 free throws. After the first quarter, Dillon was up 19-6 over Newberry. Dillon committed 9 fouls while Newberry committed 5 fouls.
Newberry’s Daizee Williams connected on a layup for 2 points followed by Dillon’s Ayonna Lester who sank a 2-point basket. The Bulldogs’ Zynijah Pernell scored a 2-point basket that was answered with a 2-point basket by Newberry’s Zy Dunbar. Dillon’s Khwnylahi McKinnon sank a 3-point basket followed by Treasure Davis who sank 1 of 2 free throws. The Lady Wildcats’ Mariah Campbell made a layup and was fouled by Jasmin Robinson. With 5:13 remaining in the first half, Dillon had 27-12. Dillon’s Treasure Davis sank a 2-point basket. Newberry’s Tamaria Wadworth scored 2 points with 3:55 remaining in the first half. Dillon was up 29-14. Newberry had already committed 2 fouls, and Dillon had committed 2 fouls by this time. Dillon’s Jiana McGill sank a 2-point layup followed by Khwnylahi McKinnon who connected for 3 points from the corner. Dillon’s Treasure Davis scored a 2-point basket. Newberry’s Zy Dunbar had her shot blocked, and Dillon’s Khwnylahi McKinnon connected for a 2-point layup and was fouled. She made the free throw. Newberry’s Zy Dunbar sank 1 of 2 free throws followed by the Bulldogs’ #1 who sank 1 of 2 free throws. At halftime, Dillon led 39-16. Dillon committed 5 fouls in the second quarter, and Newberry committed 5 plus fouls.
With 5:44 remaining in the third quarter, Dillon was up 44-19. Dillon led 53 to 22 at the end of 3 quarters. Dillon committed 2 fouls in the third quarter while Newberry committed 2 fouls.
The 22-3 overall and 10-0 in region play Dillon will face the 22-5 overall and 7-1 in region play Oceanside Collegiate Academy of Mt. Pleasant in the next round.
