Dillon Edges Oceanside, 59-57, To Claim Lower State Title

Dillon edged Oceanside Collegiate Academy 59-57 to claim the Lower State title in AAA basketball and will pay for the AAA State Championship on Thursday, March 6.
Oceanside’s Josie Hanks scored the first basket of the game for 2 points that was answered by Dillon’s Khwnylahi McKinnon who sank a basket for 2 points and followed that basket with a layup for 2 points. Mariah Campbell sank a free throw followed by Ayonna Lester’s 3-point basket from the corner. Treasure Davis connected for a 2-point basket. With 4:34 remaining in the first quarter, Dillon was up 11-3. Oceanside’s Ella Mae Schepp sank 2 free throws followed by a layup of hers. Henley Hanks banked 1 in for 2 points for the Landsharks. Dillon’s Treasure Davis hit a 3-point shot as the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter. Dillon was up 14-11. Dillon committed 1 foul while Oceanside did not commit a foul.
The Landshark’s Ella Mae Schepp connected for a 2-point basket. Dillon’s Treasure Davis responded with a 3-point basket and followed up with a 2-point basket to give Dillon a 19-13 lead. Oceanside’s Teagan Scott sank 1 for 2 points. Dillon’s Treasure Davis hit a basket for 2 points was fouled. With 5:16 remaining in the first half, Dillon led 21-15. The Landsharks’ Josie Hanks answered with a 2-point basket. Dillon’s Azyriah Ford sank a 2-point shot that was answered by the Landsharks’ Teagan Scott with a 2-point basket followed by Ella Hunter with another 2-point basket for the Oceanside Collegiate Academy. With 3:44 remaining in the first half, Dillon held a slim 2-point lead, 23-21. The Landsharks’ Teagan Scott knotted the score at 23 with a 2-point basket. Ella Hunter hit a 3-point basket from the corner followed by Teagan Scott who laid 1 in for 2 points to give the Landsharks a 28-23 lead. Oceanside Collegiate Academy’s Teagan Scott laid 1 in for 2 points. Dillon’s Mariah Campbell laid 1 in for 2 points. The Landsharks responded with a 3-point basket. Dillon’s Ayonna Lester connected for a 2-point basket that was answered by the Landsharks’ Josie Hank with a 2-point basket. Ella Mae Schepp laid 1 in for 2 points for the Landsharks. At halftime, Oceanside Collegiate was up 37-27 over Dillon. Dillon did not commit a foul in the second quarter, and Oceanside Collegiate Academy was guilty of only 2 fouls.
Oceanside placed 2 points onto the scoreboard to begin the third quarter. Dillon’s Khwnylahi McKinnon hit a 3 from the corner followed by another 3-point basket. Oceanside’s Ella Mae Schepp laid 1 in for 2 points. Dillon’s Treasure Davis connected for 1 of 2 free throws. The Landshark’s Teagan Scott connects for 3 points from the corner. Dillon’s Khwnylahi McKinnon hit a 3. With 3:49 remaining in the third quarter, Oceanside was up 43-36 over Dillon. Dillon’s Treasure Davis sank a 2-point basket that the Landsharks answered with a 2-point basket. Dillon’s Khwnylahi McKinnon responded with two 2-point baskets. Dillon’s Zadaiya Moody connected for a 2-point basket. After 3 quarters of play, Oceanside Collegiate Academy led 47-42 over Dillon. Dillon committed 4 fouls in the third quarter while Oceanside Collegiate Academy did not commit a foul.
Ella Mae Schepp scored a 2-point basket for Oceanside to begin the final quarter of play. Dillon’s Treasure Davis laid 1 in for 2 points followed by a 2-point basket by Khwnylahi McKinnon. The Landsharks’ Henley Hanks connected for 2 points. Dillon’s Treasure Davis drove to the basket and scored 2 points. Oceanside was up 51 to 46 over Dillon at this time. The Landsharks’ Teagan Scott scored 2 points. Dillon’s Khwnylahi McKinnon scored a 2-point basket. With 4:23 remaining in the game, Dillon was down 5 points, 53-48. Dillon’s Khwnylahi McKinnon scored a 2-point basket to cut the lead to 3 points with 3:44 remaining in the game. The Landsharks’ Teagan Scott scored a 2-point basket. Dillon’s Treasure Davis’ shot rimmed out but Khwnylahi McKinnon scored a 3-point basket to cut the lead to 2 points. Dillon’s Treasure Davis sank 1 of 2 free throws. With 2:06 remaining in the game, Oceanside was up by 1 point, 55-54. Dillon’s Khwnylahi McKinnon laid 1 in for 2 points to take the lead 56-55. The Landsharks’ Teagon Scott scored 2 points with 45 seconds remaining. Dillon’s Mariah Campbell connected for a 3-point basket to give Dillon a 59-57 lead with 17 seconds remaining. With 1.7 seconds remaining in the game, the ball went out of bounds but was controlled by the Landsharks. Dillon called a time out. After the time out, the Landsharks attempted a shot to tie the game but came up short.
The Dillon Lady Wildcats will face either Wahalla or St. Joseph Catholic on Thursday, March 6, at 6:00 p.m., at the Florence Center.
