BLACK HISTORY MONTH TRAILBLAZER: Detrice McCollum-Dawkins–A Trailblazer Committed to Community and Change

Breaking barriers is never easy, but for Detrice McCollum-Dawkins, it has been a calling. As the first African American woman to serve on Dillon County Council—and the first woman and African American woman to hold both the Vice Chairman and Chairman positions—she has made history and paved the way for future generations.

Reflecting on her journey, McCollum-Dawkins describes the moment of her groundbreaking achievement as both humbling and empowering. “When I realized I had accomplished something no other African American had in our county, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and responsibility. It was a moment that reminded me why representation matters. I knew that young girls—especially young Black girls—would see me and know that they, too, could lead, break barriers, and make history.”

Beyond government, she is a dynamic entrepreneur and community advocate. As the CEO of CAROLINA MedStaff and Services and 1st Insurance Agency, she has created opportunities in healthcare staffing and insurance. She also founded Logistics of Hustling, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to giving first-time offenders a second chance by providing them with the tools they need to become successful members of the community.

Her passion for service doesn’t stop there. McCollum-Dawkins is dedicated to uplifting those in need through initiatives such as Senior Sundays, where she personally prepares meals for senior citizens in her community. She also organizes winter drives to provide necessities to the elderly and has led food drives, community clean-ups, and the initiative to clean and remodel local parks—ensuring that every part of her community thrives.

When asked how she wants to be remembered in history, her response is clear: “I want to be remembered as a servant leader, someone who didn’t just occupy a position but used it to uplift others. I want my legacy to show that I fought for fairness, created opportunities, and inspired the next generation to dream big and push past barriers. My goal has always been to make a difference that outlives me.”

With her boots firmly on the ground, Detrice McCollum-Dawkins continues to be a force for change, proving that leadership is not about titles—it’s about impact, service, and paving the way for others to follow.
