City of Dillon to Plant 78 Trees This Spring at No Cost Through Trees4SC! Grant

The City of Dillon is pleased to announce that 78 new trees will be planted across the community this spring through the Trees4SC! grant program — at no cost to the City or its residents.
Dillon was awarded the competitive Trees4SC! grant after applying in 2024. Trees4SC! is a twoyear initiative that assists disadvantaged communities in improving the management of their urban forests and increasing the long-term benefits trees provide.
The Green Infrastructure Center (GIC) began working with Dillon in January 2025. As part of the grant, GIC provides detailed tree canopy cover maps and calculates the City’s overall percentage of tree canopy. GIC also works alongside City staff to develop public tree ordinances that help protect urban trees and guide proper planting and maintenance practices. Together, the City and GIC coordinate tree plantings in public spaces and host community tree giveaways.
A local workgroup established a long-term goal of increasing Dillon’s tree canopy by 1% — approximately 3,879 trees — over the next 20 years.
Community feedback identified Main Street as a priority area for the first phase of beautification. After assessing existing conditions, it was determined that several trees were not healthy or thriving. These trees have been removed and will be replaced with new plantings to support a stronger and more vibrant downtown landscape.
This spring’s planting includes:
● 25 trees along Main Street (including 4 at City Hall)
● 28 trees along the railroad tracks
● 22 trees at the Dillon City Sports Complex
● 3 additional trees placed at designated public locations
In total, 78 trees will be planted throughout Dillon this spring. Additional plantings are planned for the fall, with a focus on enhancing the City’s parks. Residents are also invited to participate in a Community Tree Giveaway on April 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This is part of the City of Dillon Annual Trash Bash, a volunteer community clean-up day that is hosted by the City of Dillon.
Through Trees4SC!, Dillon continues investing in a greener, healthier, and more beautiful community — without placing any financial burden on local taxpayers
