Loris Lions Edge Dillon Wildcats

The Loris Lions edged the Dillon Wildcats in varsity football action played in Dillon on Friday, October 3, at Dillon Memorial Stadium.
The two evenly-matched teams were tied after the first quarter of play and at halftime. However, the Lions took a 1-point advantage during the third quarter and held on to win the closely contested match-up.
Dillon took the opening kickoff and began on their own 20-yard line. With 11 minutes remaining in the first quarter, Dillon faced a second down with 11 yards to go. Loris’ #74, Damarea Thurmond, intercepted a pass to give Loris great field position on Dillon’s 17-yard line. Loris faced a third down on Dillon’s 10-yard line. Loris’ #7, Zamire Gerald, completed a 10-yard pass to #2, Khalil Sherman for the score to give the Lions a 6-0 lead over Dillon. The PAT was no good.
After the kickoff to Dillon, the Wildcats found themselves on their own 25-yard line. The Wildcats faced a third down and 8 yards to go on their own 24-yard line. Dillon’s #10, Khayel Sam Fong-Talia, connected with a pass to #15, Rike Niyongabo, for a touchdown to knot the score at 6. The PAT was no good.
Dillon kicked off to Loris. Loris was on their own 28-yard line. From there, Loris quickly moved to Dillon’s 28-yard line. Loris gained 1 yard to move the football to Dillon’s 27-yard line. The Lions scored with a 27-yard pass completion. The PAT was good. Loris led 13-6.
The Wildcats began on their own 27-yard line after the kickoff. Dillon began to move the football. Dillon scored on a 28-yard pass from Khayel Sam Fong-Talia to Zamaurious Robertson for the touchdown. The PAT was good to knot the score at 13.
Loris began on offense on their own 37-yard line after the kickoff. After a 4-yard pickup, Dillon intercepted a pass on their own 38-yard line. Dillon was forced to turn the football over on downs after moving the football to Loris’ 43-yard line. After the first quarter of play, the game was tied at 13.
Loris faced a fourth down on Dillon’s 17-yard line and managed a field goal to go up 16-13.
Dillon was forced to punt on the next offensive possession, and Loris had good field position on Dillon’s 48-yard line. Loris punted to Dillon on fourth down and 15. Dillon began offense on their own 26-yard line. Dillon moved the football into scoring position but was forced to settle for a field goal to tie the score at 16. This would be the score at halftime.
Dillon kicked off to Loris to begin the third quarter of play. Loris had the football on their own 35-yard line. The Lions faced a fourth down and 13 yards to go on their own 46-yard line. Loris was forced to punt. Dillon recovered a fumble on Loris’ 1-yard line.
Dillon’s #3, Keryien Brown, rushed for a 1-yard score. The PAT was no good. Dillon led 22-16.
After the kickoff to Loris, the Lions began on their own 39-yard line. Loris moved the football to Dillon’s 35-yard line. Dillon’s #7, Daniel Capehart, recovered a fumble on Loris’ 16-yard line. Dillon fumbled, and Loris returned the fumble 85 yards for the touchdown! The PAT was good to give Loris a 23-22 lead.
Neither team could muster a score throughout the remainder of the game. With the win, Loris is 6-0 for the season. Dillon is 3-3 for the season.
Loris will host Waccamaw on Friday, October 10, at 7:30 p.m.
Dillon will travel to Aynor on Friday, October 10, for a 7:30 p.m. match-up.
