DILLON — On Saturday, May 18, 2024, thousands will unite through the World Vision Global 6K for Water, the world’s largest such event. Participants will walk or run 6 kilometers at a local host site or from their own home or neighborhood to equip children and families in vulnerable communities around the world with lasting access to clean water.
Locally, Great Expectations Church will be partnering with World Vision for the Global 6K for Water. They will be hosting this event on May 18 at Dillon High School at 9 a.m. This is this is their second year hosting an event. Go to global6k.worldvision.org – search Dillon 6K for Water to sign up.
Globally, 703 million people lack basic drinking water access. In the developing world, people walk an average of 6 kilometers (3.73 miles) each day to find water that’s often dirty and makes them sick. It’s mostly women and girls who make this dangerous and time-consuming journey. That means girls miss school to get water for their families, which holds them back from reaching their full potential.

“Every day, more than 1,000 children under 5 die from diseases related to lack of safe water, sanitation, and hygiene,” said Crystal O’Rourke, World Vision’s Global 6K Race Director. “World Vision reaches one new person every 10 seconds with clean water. The Global 6K for Water gives people an opportunity to move their feet alongside their community while making a global impact.”
Every $50 registration fee equips one person in need with lasting access to clean water through World Vision projects. All participants receive a Global 6K for Water T-shirt, a finisher medal, and a unique race bib with a photo of a child benefiting from clean water.

Better health, education, and economic opportunities flow from clean water—and the more people who register, the more kids and families get access to clean water,” added O’Rourke. “For these children, it’s a chance for a healthier, more fulfilling future. Everyone, regardless of age, size, or fitness level, is encouraged to participate!”
World Vision is the largest nongovernmental provider of clean water in the developing world. In 2023, they helped establish lasting access to clean water for nearly 3.1 million people, improved sanitation for nearly 2.5 million, and equipped 2.9 million with access to household handwashing facilities. Their water work is part of a holistic, proven model that empowers kids and families to create lasting change for themselves, using an integrated approach that includes healthcare, education, child protection, income generation, and more.
