The SCDOR reminds shoppers that school supplies, computers, clothes, shoes, and other school-year essentials can be purchased without paying Sales Tax during South Carolina’s annual Tax Free Weekend, which runs August 1-3, 2025.
Where can I save during Tax Free Weekend?
All retailers who sell eligible items participate in Tax Free Weekend and cannot collect Sales Tax from their customers on purchases of eligible items.
Eligible items are still tax-free if you shop online! Check with your local retailer to see if they offer online shopping, delivery, or curbside pick-up.
What items are tax free?
To help shoppers make a Tax Free Weekend plan, the SCDOR sorts tax-exempt items into four categories:
School supplies used in the classroom or at home for school assignments, including musical instruments, calculators, and headphones
Computers & technology, including printers and software
— Heads up – computer parts and accessories, including monitors and keyboards, are only tax-exempt when sold as a package with a computer.
–All clothing & footwear, including graduation caps and gowns, swimwear, school uniforms, and athletic shoes
–Certain bed & bath items, including bed spreads, sheets, pillows, towels, and shower curtains
–Eligible items can be purchased new or used and are eligible regardless of price.

-Tax Free Weekend was created by the South Carolina Legislature and is outlined in SC Code Section 12-36-2120(57).
-Last year, South Carolina shoppers bought more than $22.3 million in tax-free items during Tax Free Weekend. Shoppers saved more than $1.3 million in Sales Tax.
