The Latta Lady Vikings won the SCHSL 1 A State Championship in varsity softball over the Lewisville Lady Lions 5-2 in game 2 of the 3 series in Latta on Wednesday, May 28.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Samantha Strickland hit one up the middle for a single and a rbi to give Latta a 3-2 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, Latta’s Paisley Jackson retired the fashion by striking out the 3 batters in 1-2-3 fashion.
The Lady Vikings’ Maddie Berry led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a hit to left for a single. Strickland stole second and then moved to third. However, she was stranded as the inning closed.
In the top of the sixth inning, Lewisville was retired with #1 hitting a line drive to third for out 1. The Lions’ #8 went down watching as strike 3 was called. #6 hit a grounder to second for out 3.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Sarah Bryant went down watching strike 3. Rylan Hunt garnered a walk. Hunt stole second. Samantha Strickland punched one to left and a run scored to give Latta a 4-2 lead. Strickland was safe at home to give Latta a 5-2 lead.
Lewisville went down in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the seventh on a pop-up to first for out 1, a strike out for out 2, and a grounder to second for out 3.
Paisley Jackson pitched a good game for the Latta Vikings.
Congratulations to the Latta Lady Vikings players and coaches: Rylan Hunt, Ryleigh Vicente, Madison Kersey, Chayse Walters, Sarah Bryant, Samantha Townsend, Kaidyn Richardson, Lacie Barnhill, Erika Roberts, Katelyn Johnson, Maddie Berry, Jaelynn Miller, and Paisley Jackson…and, of course, the coaching staff: Head Coach Anna Rogers and Assistant Coaches Sam Jackson and Davy Johnson.
