In-county rivals, Lake View and Latta put on quite a display of baseball in the doubleheader played on Wednesday, May 21, in Latta.
Lake View held on to edge Latta 4-3 in the opening game to force game 2 in which Lake View won in the bottom of the seventh inning!
Two great local teams and coaching staffs battled to the final run!
In game one, Lake View’s Kason Herlong arrived at first base on an error and advanced to second base on a low pitch. After a pop-up to the pitcher, Chris McGill hit a grounder by second for a single and a rbi.
In the top of the third inning, Lake View’s Chris McGill hit a grounder between short and third for a single. Kason Herlong hit a grounder to second. McGill was out at second but Herlong was safe at first. Herlong stole third and was safe at home on a passed ball to give Lake View a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, Lake View’s #8 arrived safe at first on an error. He quickly stole second. The Wild Gators’ #11 bunted one and arrived safely at first with the base runner advancing to third. Chase Price hit a grounder to short and was out at first with a run scoring to give Lake View a 3-0 lead. Lake View’s #10 was hit by a pitch to place runners on the corners. The base runner stole second. Lake View’s #23 stole second. Lake View’s #23 walked to load the bases. Kason Herlong hit a sac fly to left center to give Lake View a 4-0 lead.
Latta’s #1 hit one to center and arrived safely at first. Seth Minshew hit one to left for a single to place runners on first and second. With 2 outs, both runners advance to second and third. Latta’s #22 hit a hot grounder between short and third for a single and 2 rbi to cut Lake View’s lead to 2 runs, 4-2.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Preston Brown hit one to left field for a lead-off single. Latta’s #3 was the courtesy runner. He stole second. Latta’s #5 hit a grounder to first and was out with the base runner advancing to third. Fisher Richardson garnered a walk to place runners on the corners. Latta’s #18 hits a grounder to first and a run scored to cut Lake View’s lead to only 1 run, 4-3.
After 6 innings of play, Lake View held a 4-3.
In the top of the seventh inning, Lake View’s #2 hit a grounder between short and third for a lead-off single. Christ McGill hit a grounder to short that Latta turned into a double play. Lake View’s #19 hit one to deep left for out 3.
Latta was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning with Lake View on top 4-3 to force game 2.
In game 2, Lake View got the winning run in the bottom of the last inning to win 9-8.
Lake View will face McBee for the Class A State Championship first game on Saturday in McBee in the best of three series.
