Latta Defeats Mt. View 6-3

Mt. View's #4 is safe at second

The Latta Vikings defeated the Mt. View Golden Knights of Welch, WV, 6-3 in varsity baseball played in Latta on Thursday, April 24.
Seth Minshew was on the mound for Latta. #1 for Mt. View struck out swinging but arrived safely as first as the ball was bobbled by the catcher. Mt. View’s #1 stole second. Mt. View’s #6 lines one to short for out 1, and the throw to second before the base runner returned was out 2, a nice double play. The Golden Knights’ #11 hit a slow hopper to second and arrived safely at first. Mt. View’s #9 went down swinging for out 3.
Mt. View’s #10 was on the mound. Seth Minshew hit one up the middle for a lead-off single. Latta’s #1 replaced Minshew as a courtesy runner. He quickly stole second. Latta’s #18 hit a grounder to third and arrived safely at first on a throwing error and moved to second with the base runner scoring the first run of the game. The Vikings’ #2, Smith, drove one by short for a single and a rbi to give Latta a 2-0 lead. Latta’s #23, McColl, popped up to the pitcher for out 1. Latta’s #2 stole second. The Vikings’ #19, Braxton Bailey hit one between left and center for a double to place runners on second and third. Latta’s #11 hit a grounder to second for out 2; a run scored to give Latta a 3-0 lead. Latta’s #20 went down swinging for out 3. Latta led 3-0 after the first inning of play.
Mt. View’s #10, Tanner Little, drove one to left for a lead-off double. The Golden Knights’ #16, Walters, went down swinging. Mt. View’s #4, Barton, hit one to right to place runners on the corners. Barton stole second. On a passed ball, Barton moved to third. The Golden Knights’ #12 struck out watching. Barton managed to score to cut Latta’s lead 3-1 after 1 and ½ inning.
In the bottom of the second inning, Latta’s #12, Hyatt, hit one to right for a lead-off single. Hyatt stole second. Latta’s #16, Danny McDowell, hit one to left for a single and a rbi to give Latta a 4-1 lead. Mt. View placed #12, Ray Brewer, on the mound. McDowell stole second. Seth Minshew garnered a walk. A passed ball moved the runners to second and third. Latta’s #18 walked to load the bases. Mt. View placed #3 on the mound. Latta’s #2 hit a grounder and arrived safely at first and a run scored. However, a base runner was thrown out at third. Latta’s #23 walked to once again load the bases. Latta’s #19, Preston Bailey walked and a run crossed home plate. Latta led 6-0 with 1 out. Latta’s #11 hit a hot grounder to the pitcher, and the runner was out at home for out 2. Latta’s #20 hit a grounder to second, and the base runner was thrown out at second.
After about an hour of play, the rain began. Mt. View scored 2 runs in the top of the third inning.. After 2 and ½ innings, the game was called giving Latta a 6-3 non-conference win.
Latta’s Seth Minshew pitched 2.2 innings and allowed 5 hits, 3 earned runs, struck out 6, and walked no one. Caden Lee pitched .1 inning and allowed hits, no runs, walked no one, and struck out 1.
Latta is 13-7 overall and Mt. View is 5-5-1
Latta will host Carvers Bay at Buddy Johnson Park in Latta on Tuesday, April 29, at 6:00 p.m.
