The Dillon Lady Wildcats defeated the Loris Lady Lions 50-43 in varsity basketball action played in Dillon on Thursday, January 9.
Loris controlled the opening tip-off, and Loris’ Dazena Capers attempted the first 3-point shot of the game. Dillon quickly answered with a 3-point basket by Azyriah Ford followed by 2 free throws by Dillon’s Zynijah Pernell. Loris connected for a free throw followed by a 2-point basket by Ayonna Lester. Dillon’s Khwnylahi McKinnon connected for a 2-point basket to give Dillon a 9-1 lead with 4:59 remaining in the first quarter. Dillon managed to get a 12-3 lead. After the first quarter of play, Dillon was up 13-6. Each team committed 4 fouls in the first quarter.
At halftime, Dillon led 21-13. Dillon committed 2 fouls in the second quarter, and Loris committed 3 fouls.
Loris quickly scored a 2-point basket by Mari’Asia Moody followed by Janiya Richburg who banked one in for 2 points. Janyshia Brown connected for 2 points followed by 2 free throws by Dazena Capers to knot the score at 21 with 5:20 remaining in the third quarter. Dillon’s Khwnylahi McKinnon sank 2 free throws followed by a 2-point basket by the Lady Wildcats to go up 25-21. Loris’ Mari’Asia Moody hit a 3-point basket to cut Dillon’s lead to 1-point, 25-24. Loris’ Janiya Richburg hit a 3-point basket to give the Lady Lions a 26-25 lead with 52 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Dillon responded with a 3-point basket to take a 28-26 lead. Janiya Richburg scored a 2-point basket as the buzzer sounded to end the third quarter knotted at 28. Dillon committed 5 fouls, and Loris committed 3 fouls in the third quarter.
Loris’ Dazena Capers sank a 2-point basket to give the Lady Lions a 31-30 lead that Dillon’s Khwnylahi McKinnon responded with a 3-point basket to give the Lady Wildcats a 31-30 lead. The Lady Wildcats’ Treasure Davis sank a 3-point basket, and Loris’ Mari’Asia Moody responded with a 3-point basket to know the score at 36. Dillon’s Khwnylahi McKinnon sank a free throw to give Dillon a 37-36 lead with 4:38 remaining in the game. McKinnon sank another free throw, and Dillon was up by 2 points. McKinnon followed with a 2-point basket. Loris quickly answered with a 3-point basket by Mari’Asia Moody to cut Dillon’s lead to 1 point, 40-39. Dillon’s Treasure Davis softly banked one in off the glass for 2 points. Dillon had a 3-point lead with 3:06 remaining. Ayonna Lester connected for 2 points for the Lady Wildcats and sank a free throw to give Dillon a 45-39 lead. Mari’Asia Moody connected on a layup for 2 points followed by Dillon’s Treasure Davis who sank 2 free throws. Dillon was up 47-41. Kha’lazia Stephens cut Dillon’s lead to 47-43 on a 2-point basket with 40 seconds remaining in the game. Dillon’s Khwnylahi McKinnon sank a free throw followed by a 2-point basket to give Dillon the 50-43 finish. Dillon committed 3 fouls, and Loris committed 5 fouls in the fourth quarter.
Dillon is 8-4 overall.
Loris is 9-6 overall.
Dillon will travel to Aynor on Tuesday, January 14, for a 6:00 p.m. game.
