A Dillon City Councilman is speaking out about why he didn’t vote in favor of the new Dillon City manager on Monday night.
Burt Rogers was named the Dillon City Manager upon the retirement of current City Manager Glen Wagner next year at Monday night’s meeting in a 5-2 vote after the executive session.
Councilman Johnny Eller was one of those opposing votes and said the reason he didn’t vote in favor is simple–he wanted the job to be advertised and applications taken.
Eller said that he was willing to name Rogers the interim administrator on Monday night until the hiring process was completed. He said he wanted to give Rogers the respect of talking to him about the job, his expectations, and plans for the city.
Eller said he strongly believes they needed to advertise. “We failed the community when we didn’t advertise,” Eller said calling it an “injustice.”
Eller said he just wanted to have a fair process where candidates could apply for the job if they were interested and go through the process of hiring.
It is important to note that no federal or state law prevents promoting from within; however, Eller said he wanted a fair and transparent hiring process.
